In a vacuum, sure, but I'm talking more about their success in both basketball (Vanderbilt previously has had a modicum amount of success in the sport, but have only made 5 Sweet 16s and made the Elite 8 only once in 1965) AND in football (Vanderbilt has until recently been a joke in the sport - a team allowed to play in the SEC because they were an easy win historically). Both teams have flirted with the top-10 this season. Money has been a critical factor.
I will say this as someone who has some ties to Vandy and still loosely follows the football program: they have definitely started to spend money, but they also deserve credit for making a smart hire in Clark Lea. The program was in rough shape when he took over and it’s been a pretty methodical rebuild with some bumps along the way. I would say their success this season goes beyond just dumping in a bunch of money.

I will fully admit to not knowing a lot about their present situation. My mother got her undergrad from Vandy, though, and so I watched their badness with some interest, until COVID, when I mostly disengaged from non-UNC/Olympic sports.

They’re a fun team. Pulling for them this year after UNC

I think lack of size will catch up with them eventually

But for now that offense is really good and will win a bunch in the SEC
I think their defense is under appreciated. Not hardcore clamp down D that suppresses scoring, but they do well to force turnovers and generate pace that benefits their offense.
