"The State Department lashed out Thursday at House Republicans over a subpoena for testimony about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, accusing them of repeatedly calling for hearings on days they knew Secretary of State Antony Blinken was unavailable to appear.

Rep. Michael McCaul, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he was trying to accommodate Blinken, who faces the threat of being held in contempt of Congress if he doesn’t appear.

The Texas Republican had first set a hearing for Thursday, while Blinken was in Egypt and France. He then changed the date to Tuesday, when Blinken will be at the annual U.N. General Assembly gathering of world leaders in New York and attending President Joe Biden’s speech at the time of the hearing.

“They have unilaterally selected a date when we have told them in advance that he will be not in Washington, D.C., because he will be elsewhere carrying out important meetings to advance the foreign policy interests of the United States,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. ..."

"... Reps. Ralph Norman, Chip Roy and Thomas Massie. The trio has the power to block any rule if they side with Democrats.”

“Norman famously hates CRs and told us last week he wouldn’t back a three-month stopgap bill. Roy’s SAVE Act was twinned to a six-month CR and failed on the floor last week. And Massie loathes Speaker Mike Johnson and seems to relish criticizing him publicly.” ..."

Mike Johnson Privately Tells Republicans Trump Doesn’t Want a Shutdown

The speaker briefed members on his private conversation with Trump and left them with some key impressions.

"... Multiple people left the meetings on Monday and Tuesday with the takeaway that Trump planned to keep quiet about the CR and let members vote on it without outside pressure from him.

“I took it that he understood the speaker’s case,” Bacon said. “It seemed like there was agreement.” ..."

Jeff Jackson on Government Shutdown Theater:

Three weeks ago, I told you to expect a three-act play for the latest government shutdown saga.

Act One: The Speaker pretends to agree to the demands issued by his right-flank.

Complete.

Act Two: The Speaker lets that effort fail, then throws his right-flank under the bus and gives them nothing by agreeing to a normal budget extension, as he was always going to do.

Complete, as of yesterday.

Act Three: The right-flank pretends to be angry and goes on TV to blast the Speaker for his weakness.

Pending. This is what you’ll see this week.

It’s just the latest performance of Congressional Outrage Theater, but now you have a playbill to follow along - and, hopefully, to spread some awareness about how contrived this stuff is so we become less susceptible to this kind of manipulation going forward.

The GQP and Laren Boobert have already announced the traditional Democrat War on Christmas.

Doesn't the traditional War on Christmas typically begin shortly after Thanksgiving ?

As Bugs Bunny used to say, "What a maroon!"

Steve Scalise Says the GOP Already Has Big Plans for the First 100 Days [assuming GOP sweep]

Scalise wants to use budget reconciliation for a package of tax cuts and border wall funding in the first 100 days. Whether or not reforming Obamacare will be in that package remains to be seen.

----

Will they be able to elect a Speaker in the first 100 days if GOP holds the House?

A very good question. Another one -- this assumes, I assume, a GOP-controlled Senate would immediately eliminate the filibuster?

Reconciliation only requires a majority in the Senate, 50+ VP.

Ambitious goals for getting priorities accomplished in the first 100 days of a new administration is hardly news.

One would assume a major goal will be to extend or make permanent parts of the TCJA that will otherwise sunset in 2025.

People need to stop using the word "reform" to describe what will either be a) effectively a repeal or b) making it much, much worse.
