Mic drop.
Here we have a thread about cover songs featuring highly skilled musicians. I present to you: Edgar Meyer (highly skilled musician) performing his cover version of Bach’s Unaccompanied Cello Suites… on Double Bass. (Yes, you read that correctly. Cello suites performed on double bass.) put that in your pipe and smoke it.

So I learned something new. Thx. I itty bitty know the difference in instuments. So I googled:

Strings and tuning represent the core of these instruments' differences. Typically, cellos are tuned in fifths (C-G-D-A), similar to the viola and violin, creating a harmonious, full, bright sound. Double basses, however, are tuned in fourths (E-A-D-G), contributing to their more profound, resonant tone.May 10, 2024
Cello vs. Double Bass – What's the Difference - Ronald Sachs Violins

I imagine it would be a stretch to cover it so closely. Here's the classic take. This Meyer guy was dead on.

Yes. I think that was YoYo Ma playing the suite in G major - on cello of course. The Edgar Meyer version is unique as it's played on double bass - not cello. Amazing technique. And let's face it... it's Bach. You have Bach... and then you have everything else.

Meyer had to transpose some of the suites to make it work on double bass. For example, the suite in G major (the iconic one that a lot of people are most familiar) he transposed it to A major.

Not my everyday listening but I have the two Appalachia albums with Mark O'Connor, YoYo Ma and Edgar Meyer. Some talented musicians on those albums. Came to them by way of Mark O'Connor ,fwiw but all of them are standouts.

Some years ago I was noodling around trying to find O'Conner stuff. Found this. Not a song or music but pretty interesting.

Been a fan of Mark O'Conner since he won fiddle and guitar championships back in the 1970’s.
Mark is also a huge ANTI-TRUMPER. Big time progressive.

I once attended a bass workshop with Edgar Meyer. I’ve seen Mark and Edgar several times in concert. Never seen YoYo, but I’ve got 2 or 3 of his CDs including the Unaccompanied Cello Suites
