Everybody and their brother has covered "Tell my Ma" - Van Morrison & The Dubliners, Sinead O'Conner, The Wiggles, The Chieftains, the Irish Tenors... but my favorite version is the Rankin Family (in keeping with the traditional music vein of this thread)
 
I'm not going to claim it's better than the original, but one of my favorite covers in the vein of "reimagining a song in a different musical style" is Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence," which I seem to recall got a stamp of approval from Paul Simon:

I really liked Molly Tuttle's Bluegrass cover of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit."
