CURRENT EVENTS - April 27-30

“… One order directs Pam Bondi, the attorney general, and Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, to publish a list of state and local jurisdictions that the Trump administration considers “sanctuary cities” and to “pursue all necessary legal remedies and enforcement measures” against jurisdictions that continue to oppose the administration’s immigration crackdown.

A second order instructs the Trump administration to provide legal resources to cops accused of wrongdoing; review and attempt to modify existing restraints on law enforcement, such as federal consent decrees; provide military equipment to local law enforcement; and use enforcement measures against local officials who “unlawfully prohibiting law enforcement officers from carrying out duties.”

… A third executive order seeks to enforce existing rules requiring professional truck drivers to be proficient in English. The order requires the Transportation Department to place any driver who cannot speak and read English as “out-of-service.”

“Proficiency in English,” Mr. Trump’s order states, “should be a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers.” …”

That third one is potentially bad news for the supply chain, though potentially could dovetail nicely at first with a loss of routes for truckers due to a recent drop in deliveries to ports due to the trade war.

So the "top experts" on the panel consist of people like Hegseth, Noem, Abbott, and their ilk? LOL. I'm sure their "recommendations" will be based on the best evidence and not just batshit crazy conspiracy theories, fact-free accusations and claims, longstanding grievances, and incompetent bungling. At least we'll all be able to read about Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski's extramarital affair, as you just know that Hegseth will post juicy details about them to his wife and relatives in his Signal group chat.

Trump Recasts Mission of Justice Dept.’s Civil Rights Office, Prompting ‘Exodus’

Hundreds of lawyers and other staff members are fleeing the arm of the agency that defends constitutional rights, which appointees intend to reshape to enact President Trump’s agenda.

“Hundreds of lawyers and other staff members are leaving the Justice Department’s civil rights division, as veterans of the office say they have been driven out by Trump administration officials who want to drop its traditional work in order to aggressively pursue cases against the Ivy League, other schools and liberal cities.

The wave of departures has only accelerated in recent days, as the administration reopened its “deferred resignation program,” which would allow employees to resign but continue to be paid for a period of time. The offer, for those who work in the division, expires on Monday. More than 100 lawyers are expected to take it, on top of a raft of earlier departures, in what would amount to a decimation of the ranks of a crucial part of the Justice Department.

… Traditionally the department has protected the constitutional rights of minority communities and marginalized people, often by monitoring police departments for civil rights violations, protecting the right to vote and fighting housing discrimination.

… The administration is instead determined, the lawyers said, to fundamentally end how the storied division has functioned since it was established during the Eisenhower administration in the 1950s, becoming an enforcement arm for President Trump’s agenda against state and local officials, college administrators and student protesters, among others….”

With rare bipartisan support, Congress passes bill to outlaw deepfake pornography

The Take It Down Act has been a top priority for First Lady Melania Trump. President Trump is expected to sign the bill into law.

“…The newly-passed bill will require technology platforms to remove reported “non-consensual, sexually exploitative images” within 48 hours of receiving a valid request. Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, introduced the legislation in August. …”

Trump’s first 100 days supercharged a global ‘freefall of rights’, says Amnesty

World now in era of repressive regimes’ impunity, climate inaction and unchecked corporate power, says report

“…Sasha Deshmukh, Amnesty International UK’s chief executive, described the US president’s swift and deliberate targeting of international institutions designed to make the world safer and fairer as “terrifying”.

“You look forward to the end of this decade and wonder whether the basic frameworks and underpinnings of not just human rights but international law will still be standing. You probably haven’t been able to say that since 1935,” he said.

Amnesty’s report also documents how mass arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances and lethal force are becoming increasingly widespread tools of repression.

… Trump’s sweeping foreign aid cuts had made conditions worse across the world, Amnesty said, closing crucial programmes in states such as Yemen and Syria, leaving children and survivors of conflict without access to food, shelter or healthcare.

…Amnesty also raised concerns over failures to uphold international humanitarian law, citing Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

In Europe, Amnesty said Russia killed more Ukrainian civilians in 2024 than the previous year and continued to target non-military infrastructure. Trump is proposing that Ukraine cede territory to Russia as part of peace proposals dismissed as appeasement by critics.”

“… As the legal battle unfolds, some CFPB rules — many of which already faced challenges in court — might remain on hold for several years. Others might be overturned outright or wither away because of weak enforcement. Mark Paoletta, the consumer watchdog’s chief legal officer, said in a memo that all CFPB enforcement and supervision priorities have been rescinded as part of an effort to slash the agency’s oversight efforts….”

Who is Hannah Dugan, the Milwaukee judge arrested by the FBI?

Federal officials alleged that the county judge obstructed the detention of an undocumented immigrant.

I just heard about this story. Truly insane behavior from a judge. When you're talking about the law, it's shocking when police abuse their power but not entirely shocking reconsiderimg a number of factors involved, like educational requirements.

To see a judge behave in such an unlawful manner is pretty shocking.

ICE Arrests Nearly 800 in Florida in Operation With Local Officers

The four-day operation came as the Trump administration has sought to enlist local authorities in an immigration crackdown.

“… The operation began on Monday and targeted undocumented immigrants with final deportation orders, according to an ICE official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the operation. The officers picked up more than 275 migrants with final removal orders, the data showed.

… It was the latest move by the Trump administration to seek to accelerate deportations of undocumented immigrants, which have so farbeen well below the administration’s goals.

…The effort this week in Florida was the first to be conducted as part of a formal arrangement with state law enforcement known as a 287(g) agreement, according to the official. …”

I am genuinely surprised that ICE is struggling to meet its mass deportation targets not because of court’s intervening when necessary but because they don’t seem to be able to round up the large numbers of immigrants promised. Can they not find them? Do they not exist in the vast numbers claimed?

We may yet see them realize the dream of vast camps teeming with detained immigrants pending deportation, and I have no objection to deporting someone here illegally once the deportee has an opportunity for due process to establish whether they have a right to remain, but I have read repeatedly the las three months ho frustrated Trump, Miller and others in the administration are about the lack of alacrity in mass deportations.

I had read a month or two ago that Admin officials were concerned that the slow start to deportations would hinder their plan and get it bogged down in court cases where the media and liberals could start to exploit “toxic empathy” for individual stories and sap support for the mass deportation of millions. But it has never been clear in any of the coverage I’ve read why they were/are struggling with collecting massive numbers of immigrants…
Don't let dogood find out, he'll be overwhelmed with joy.

Trump order to loosen fishing regulations poses major risks, experts warn

Conservationists fear fallout from president’s proclamation on fishing in federally protected area of Pacific Ocean

“… Environmental conservation groups are expressing major concerns over Donald Trump’s recent proclamation to reverse fishing regulations across the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine national monument, a federally protected area in the central Pacific Ocean spanning nearly 500,000 sq miles.

Established by George W Bush in 2009 and expanded by Barack Obama in 2014, the monument encompasses seven federally protected islands and atolls, as well as 165 seamounts – underwater mountains that are biodiversity hotspots. …”
Is there anything that trump doesn't want to fuck up?
