FWIW, the FDNY Commissioner is not a "fire chief"....that is a separate position. The Commissioner is more of a "CEO" and is in charge of the business side of the department. The previous two FDNY commissioners also had no experience ever working as a firefighter and there was no outrage about that. In fact, I believe the majority of people appointed to that position have come from a non-fire background. Of course, that didn't matter as long as the appointees were straight.

Anyway, when the topic of the plight of the less advantaged would come up, he would shrug it off and say how life isn’t fair and if you want a better life you just had to work hard for it, even though he never had to work to get most of the things he was privileged enough to have. When he made those arguments, I would point out he was born into privilege, and he would respond with things like, “Yes, but it’s not like I was born as Michael Jordan’s son. I wasn’t born into that kind of wealth. But you don’t hear me whining about life not being fair.”

Sucks. Have seen quite a number of veterans with cancer and neurological issues that are likely due to the water at Lejeune. Others who are healthy now but afraid that they'll get a diagnosis in the future...
