“… For now, the White House is giving priority to stability, moving to sideline policy decisions that could incite retaliation from China or derail the summit. The administration has delayed a proposed ban on routersfrom TP-Link—the world’s largest provider of consumer Wi-Fi routers, which accounts for a sizable share of the U.S. home-networking market—and held off on further restrictions against China Telecom’s U.S. operations.

With the summit around the corner, the Pentagon’s new national defense strategy struck a conciliatory tone toward Beijing. The document, released in January, stressed the need to establish “a decent peace, on terms favorable to Americans but that China can also accept and live under.”

That strategy didn’t specifically mention Taiwan but included a more general statement that the U.S. military will “erect a strong denial defense along the First Island Chain.” That string of islands includes Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.”
