"As if the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell's 1984 now existed, with its motto 'Ignorance is Strength,' this Court is now asked to determine whether the federal government has the power it claims—to dissemble and disassemble historical truths when it has some domain over historical facts. It does not," Rufe said in her ruling.

One of the main purposes of high school civics classes for generations has been to encourage students to participate in civics events and activities, and that includes peaceful protests. If people like Paxton have their way we just need to do away with high school civics classes because it will be clear that MAGA doesn't want students (or anyone, really) protesting or participating in our civic life, so the classes themselves are teaching lies at that point and are no longer relevant - "well kids, this is the textbook version of our government, but it doesn't really exist any longer. In reality you just need to sit down and shut up and do what you're told and never vote unless it's for Republicans. Don't you even think about protesting anything we don't approve of. Oh, and we don't really have separation of powers or checks and balances anymore either. Dear Leader and MAGA now has all the power, as it should be."

I went 1st grade through 12th grade in the left-wing Chapel Hill/Carrboro School System.

I never had a “civics” class.

I did have some great history classes.

Did you have any classes on American government, wherein topics included the constitution, the structure and duties of the 3 branches of government, how bills and laws are passed, etc?

Yes.

They were within history classes. We thoroughly covered “How a bill becomes a law or not.” SCOTUS. The Constitution. The Federalist Papers.

I never had Freddie Kiger as a history teacher; he taught at Phillips when I was at CHHS. I was lucky enough to have Tony Yount and Mrs. Collins as history teachers in junior and senior high school. And, the great Diane Shaw; who, along with Tony Yount and Mrs. Collins wove English classes and history classes together and helped us write better. Fabulous teachers.

Yes.

I remember learning this in Mrs. McDougal’s 3rd grade class and Mrs. DiConstanza’s 4th grade class at Estes Hills Elementary in Chapel Hill in the early ‘70’s.

The MAGA way.

Pint-sized, closeted gay man nicknamed Lady G calls a woman taller than him "little lady."

Just writes itself

We all have or first amendment rights, as long as we have the courage to not cede them without a fight. Don’t threaten anyone and you’re fine, these frivolous charges be damned. We all face a stark binary choice here; exercise our rights or lose them for good.

Oh, and everything old is new again…

Know Your Rights
The Clash

Everybody will now rise

To the occasion
And know your rights
All three of them

Number one
You have a right
Not to be killed
Unless

It was by a policeman or an aristocrat
Know your rights

Two
You have a right to food, food money
Provided, of course
You agree to be investigated, humiliated, and treated with otherwise
Fashion

Know your rights
All three of them

Know your rights
All three of them
Yeah-hey-hey

Number three
You have a right
To free speech
As long as it is not the truth
And has nothing whatsoever to do with the truth
And furthermore
Has never, in any way, been connected with the truth

These are your rights
Know your rights
Stand up for your rights
Yes, all three of them

It has been suggested in some quarters
That this is not enough
Be quiet, go home
Finish up your drinks
Get off the streets
Break it up now
Don't you have a home to go to?
