“… Odner said, “I cannot think of a more ubiquitous symbol of American exceptionalism in the arts, entertainment, and popular culture at large than President Trump.”

House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee approved an amendment earlier this month to the interior, environment and related agencies annual spending bill that would rename a space inside the Kennedy Center — the prominent Washington arts hub’s famed opera house — the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House.”

… The Kennedy Center opened its doors to the public in 1971. It describes its namesake Kennedy on its website as a “lifelong supporter and advocate of the arts” who “frequently steered the public discourse toward what he called ‘our contribution to the human spirit.'”

According to the institution, two months after Kennedy’s 1963 assassination, “Congress passed and President Johnson signed into law legislation renaming the National Cultural Center… as a ‘living memorial’ to Kennedy.”…”

I suppose when you consider that he may be the last president of the United States, it makes sense.

What a load of horseshit this is. Kennedy had his flaws, but he and especially his wife were major supporters of the arts, including having people like famed cellist Pablo Casals perform at the White House in 1961. I seriously doubt it will happen, but it's just another example of Congressional Republicans falling over themselves to kiss Dear Leader's ass, like the proposals to add his face to Mt. Rushmore, renaming Dulles International Airport in Washington after him, or even to make his birthday a national holiday.

Now imagine the MAGA outrage if a Dem President implemented a censorship mechanism of this nature.
Indeed. What worries me is that Paramount does own properties like the Star Trek franchise, which is famous for promoting a very diverse view of the future. I'm wondering if the new owners of Paramount will try to start interfering with things like that. There's no limit to what our new right-wing corporate overlords may try to do.

Don't see a way to get an Athletic gift link, but I suspect many of you will be able to read it by the end of the week.

Pat McAfee apologized to Ole Miss student Mary Kate Cornett on “The Pat McAfee Show” Wednesday, months after amplifying an unsubstantiated rumor involving Cornett, the fallout from which forced her to switch to online classes and move out of her dormitory.

The rumor, which involved a false claim involving Cornett’s romantic life, started on the anonymous messaging app YikYak in February before making its way to X and later the sports talk world, including posts by Barstool personalities KFC Barstool and Jack Mac, a discussion by ESPN radio hosts in St. Louis and a mention on McAfee’s show.

“I have since learned that the story was not true and that my show played a role in the anguish caused to a great family and especially to a young woman, Mary Kate Cornett,” McAfee said on his show on Wednesday.

...

Once Cornett’s phone number was posted online, she told The Athletic that she received degrading voicemails and that someone created a cryptocurrency memecoin with her name attached to it. Police showed up at Cornett’s mother’s house, her boyfriend faced online bullying and her grandfather received a taunting call in the middle of the night.

“I would like people to be held accountable for what they’ve done,” Cornett said in April. “You’re ruining my life by talking about it on your show for nothing but attention, but here I am staying up until 5 in the morning, every night, throwing up, not eating because I’m so anxious about what’s going to happen for the rest of my life.”

In April, weeks after first discussing the rumor, McAfee alluded to the situation during a live event in Pittsburgh, saying that he “didn’t want to add any more negativity as it was taking place” and would try to “make some sort of silver lining in a very terrible situation.” KFC Barstool, Jack Mac and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy also apologized for the situation.

“… "On March 11, 2025, Judge Boasberg attended a session of the Judicial Conference of the United States, which exists to discuss administrative matters like budgets, security, and facilities. While there, Judge Boasberg attempted to improperly influence Chief Justice Roberts and roughly two dozen other federal judges by straying from the traditional topics to express his belief that the Trump Administration would "disregard rulings of federal courts" and trigger "a constitutional crisis." Although his comments would be inappropriate even if they had some basis, they were even worse because Judge Boasberg had no basis—the Trump Administration has always complied with all court orders. Nor did Judge Boasberg identify any purported violations of court orders to justify his unprecedented predictions."

"Within days of those statements, Judge Boasberg began acting on his preconceived belief that the Trump Administration would not follow court orders. First, although he lacked authority to do so, he issued a temporary restraining order preventing the Government from removing violent Tren de Aragua terrorists, which the Supreme Court summarily vacated.

"Taken together, Judge Boasberg’s words and deeds violate Canons of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges, and, erode public confidence in judicial neutrality, and warrant a formal investigation."

The DOJ is asking Chief Judge Srinivasan to refer the complaint to a special investigative committee as an inquiry is essential to determine whether Judge Boasberg’s conduct constitutes "conduct prejudicial to the effective and expeditious administration of the business of the courts." The complaint also asks that Judge Boasberg be taken off the case involving Venezuelan migrants who were deported to El Salvador, "to prevent further erosion of public confidence while the investigation proceeds."…”
