“… EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the timing of the proposed repeal during an appearance on the conservative “Ruthless” podcast Tuesday morning. He had previously said last week that he would axe the finding.

… The finding is not just symbolic: It also represents a legal justification for climate regulations, especially rules governing the auto industry that have significant environmental and economic ramifications.

In 2007, the Supreme Court case Massachusetts v. EPA authorized the agency to regulate climate change if it makes a determination that global warming poses harm to the American people….”

Yeah, a stern finger pointing letter may seem frustrating but this is another complicated matter that has some resemblance to Cold War proxy wars but complicated by trade relations. At this point, Cambodia is pretty close to a Chinese client state that grew its exports to the USA under the first Trump Admin but appears to have become a pass through for Chinese goods while also cooperating with the Chinese military and cracking down on already limited civil rights of Cambodian citizens.

But part of this is also an internal power struggle inside Thailand where a populist oligarch family (mainly right now Thaksin Shinawatra) has basically held or controlled the prime minister seat on and off this century, though Thaksin was subject of a 2006 coup (he is back in Thailand now after a loud and lavish exile period) and current pressure on the military/royal control of a lot of Thailand. But Thaksin is old and his support is weakening and the Thai military has been stoking nationalism to solidify their political gains at Thaksin’s cost, but when you stoke nationalism you usually have to have an outside enemy to fight with.

The Thai military and the Thai king seem like they are forming an alliance to re-make or eliminate democratic government (such as it is) in Thailand — the military rewrote the constitution there after the last coup but it didn’t have their intended effect of limiting populists getting elected. Meanwhile, the monarchy has its own Brownshirt ultranationalists paramilitary separate from the military and police that has been protesting against the democratic government and allegedly terrifying citizens in Bangkok — and the my has declined to intervene against them.

So Thailand is on the verge of a possible military/monarchy junta and a foreign conflict helps build support of the military. But they probably can’t afford sustained fighting with Cambodia, they just want to further stoke nationalism to improve conditions for a new coup.

EPA has to go! Too big a stone in the shoe of many deep pocket RNC and Trump supporters. We just can't remember that RNC's one real agenda is to wick wealth upward. Other than that, everything is to appease a majority of the voters making that agenda possible.

Wow, you know an impressive amount about this conflict. Are you doing any financing for deals in the area? Not that it's the only reason you would know, but this is a deep dive.

I can't bring myself to follow this stupid conflict. Or any conflict in that area. I rarely say this about any country, but damn if they weren't better off under colonial rule. What's the genocide count now? And the idiotic wars and conflicts count?

Thailand genocides = 0
Cambodia genocides = 1

Plus, Thailand was never colonized. Cambodia is basically colonized by China right now.

Retained my interest in the region from college days, read on and off over the years about the Khmer Rouge in particular but continued to follow Southeast Asian politics a good bit over the succeeding decades (for an American with no family, business or academic reason to do so).
