CURRENT EVENTS July 6 - *

Yeah, that's not the antifa that exists today. Those dudes would probably throw a brick through your dad's window if he was still around. Looting and burning down someone's private business because you don't like what one person did 1,000 miles away isn't "anti-fascism", it is essentially terrorism. By the same token, if a group of dudes called themselves the "anti-klan" but rode around in white hoods terrorizing black people, they'd still be racist shitbags despite their name.
I’m not so sure. They might be the vanguard and modern equivalent of what came to be known as the German and French underground after the fascist had taken 100% control. But we’re not quite there-yet.

Of course they're all about "moving forward", because they don't want to discuss what an epic screw-up this was by local and state and federal officials all up and down the line. It appears that Trumpers are now going to adopt for natural disasters in which their budget cuts and lax regulation led to unnecessary deaths the same line they use for school mass shootings: first, offer "thoughts and prayers" to those affected, second, criticize liberals or anyone else who dares to point out their failures that helped lead to the tragedy ("this is not the time to offer criticism or talk politics"), and finally, announce that they are "moving forward" and "thinking ahead" instead of looking back upon the tragedy and actually learning from their mistakes and doing something about it. The end result - which has certainly been the case with school shootings - is that nothing changes, which is what they want.

Wouldn’t it be better for the post-AI earth to have fewer people?

I dunno. I don’t want Children of Men or anything. This is an issue that bears scrutiny but also count me as suspicious of those who want to use this to drive a return to a more patriarchal society where women’s opportunities are circumscribed by an obligation to reproduce at a mandated level.

Also an interesting note for the current moment from the article:

“… To maintain a stable population — no growth, no decline — the average woman needs to have roughly 2.1 kids. In the U.S., total fertility began dipping below that 2.1 threshold decades ago, and then after 2007, fertility rates plunged rapidly to a record low of roughly 1.6.

… There appear to be other upsides to declining fertility. Along with growing individual freedom and economic empowerment of women, the U.N. study also found a rapid drop in the number of girls and teenagers giving birth.

"The decline of the adolescent birth rates has been, I would say, one of the major success stories in global population health over the past three decades," said Vladimíra Kantorová, the U.N.'s chief population scientist.

… But many countries, including China, Italy, Japan, Russia and South Korea, have already seen populations begin to shrink. China alone is expected to lose more than 780 million people, more than half its population, by 2100.

… A 2023 study by the Brookings Institution, meanwhile, found that without significant numbers of immigrants coming to the U.S. in the future, the country's population would plunge by more than 100 million people this century.…”

Well silver lining is there won't be any jobs for humans besides grave diggers soon. And honestly I am sure a robot can do that.

“ voluntary” departures but under pressure:

“… Tens of thousands of federal workers took a buyout deal that offered pay through Sept. 30 to employees who left their positions. Many signed up as the threat of layoffs loomed, policy priorities changed and agencies enacted in-office work requirements.

Others have retired early or have been pushed out through layoffs targeting probationary employees, amounting to potentially hundreds of thousands of departures overall this year, said Max Stier, chief executive of the better-government group Partnership for Public Service.

… The VA said Monday, before the court’s ruling, that layoffs wouldn’t be necessary because roughly 30,000 employees will depart the agency by the end of the fiscal year. These cuts came from voluntary early retirement, attrition and the resignation program. …”

I think this counts as a current event...

Trump is considering deporting to Ireland ?

Now I'm going to go with "he is just joking", but given what is going on the world today, does America really think this where the attention of the President of the United of America should be today ?
