Marine Le Pen Found Guilty of Embezzlement, Banned From Next Election

Judges convict the far-right leader of misusing EU funds and bar her from running in the 2027 presidential elections

“… Monday’s sentence bars Le Pen from seeking public office for the next five years, upending France’s political order and thrusting her far-right party into limbo. Le Pen also received a four-year prison sentence. Half of that term was suspended, judges said, adding that she could serve the remaining two years by using an electronic bracelet or other alternatives to jail time.

…The ruling takes Le Pen out of contention for the 2027 race, when President Emmanuel Macronfinishes his second and final term and she was expected to be the front-runner.

The court ruled that Le Pen and other members of her party illegally used 4.4 million euros, equivalent to $4.8 million, in EU funding that was earmarked for assistants helping lawmakers in the European Parliament with their work. Instead, judges said, Le Pen and her lawmakers used the money to pay party staffers who weren’t involved in work for the parliament. …”
I was going to post this, but too late.
Naturally Le Pen starts whining about witch hunt like her asshole buddy trump did.

I've said it before, but Trump is the first president who talks like a Middle Eastern strong man. I could easily see his absurd threats coming from Saddam Hussein or Qaddafi. But I bet Billy Bob Maga in Alabama thinks that is how real leaders should talk.

The Proud Boys and Militias Come to Tesla’s Defense

After weeks of “Tesla Takedown” protests, extremist groups are showing up to back Elon Musk’s beleaguered car company.

“… While the protest movement comprises people angered at Elon Musk’s role in the dismantling of federal government agencies, the counterprotest movement that showed up this weekend was peopled mostly by MAGA supporters. Among them were an array of far-right extremists, including members of the Proud Boys, armed militias, and at one event in Idaho, a guy dressed as Hitler.

… Isolated incidents of vandalism against Tesla vehicles and chargers as well as dealerships have led Trump to push the Department of Justice to treat alleged violent protesters as “domestic terrorists,” and now some extremist groups have taken it upon themselves to help Musk fight back.

…Also in Meridian were a number of armed individuals in camouflage gear, some wearing body armor, according to images of the counterprotest posted to Bluesky. Pettinger also appeared to be armed, according to video footage showing a handgun tucked into his jodhpurs.

Meanwhile, Josh Fulfer, who is known online as Oreo Express and was at the US Capitol in Washington on January 6, joined a counterprotest group in Fresno, California, telling a local news outlet: “We’re out here to show support for DOGE, Elon Musk, Tesla, and this administration.” Fulfer can be seen on his own videos harassing and shouting at protesters. …”

Trump administration targets billions in funding to Harvard

An antisemitism task force will review $8.7 billion in multiyear grants and $255 million in contracts to the university and its affiliates.

“… The Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism will review the more than $255 million in contracts between the federal government, Harvard and its affiliates. And it will also look at more than $8.7 billion in multiyear grant commitments to ensure the school is in compliance with federal regulations, the announcement from the departments of Education, Health and Human Services and the U.S. General Services Administration said.

… The federal government will work with relevant contracting agencies to assess whether stop-work orders should be issued for any identified contracts, according to the announcement, and Harvard has been ordered to provide a comprehensive list of all contracts with the federal government not included in the initial review. …”

Will Harvard capitulate?

I know the provost. He's a Scalia clerk who is quite open about being an observant Jew (though he does not wear a yarmulke). He's also a cautious guy.

If he were left to make the decision himself, I think he'd capitulate. Question is whether he would put Harvard's interests first.

Trump wants to revive "alien registration" for immigrants. Advocates say no.

“Immigrant advocates on Monday sued the Trump administration over a rule requiring immigrants to register with the federal government or face criminal prosecution.

Advocates say President Donald Trump's revival of a dormant "alien registration" law would turn the United States into a "show me your papers" country and expose non-citizens – even those here legally – to a new criminal enforcement regime, the lawsuit claims.

The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleges the Department of Homeland Security and top administration leaders failed to follow procedure in announcing plans to enforce the rule, which takes effect April 11. …”

“… On his first day in office, Trump issued an executive order called "Protecting the American People Against Invasion." It ordered the DHS to ensure all "unregistered aliens" register with the government and submit fingerprints and biographical information.

… The administration's interim final rule requires all non-citizens carry proof of their registration at all times or face a $5,000 fine and up to 30 days imprisonment. Refusing to register could result in a $5,000 fine and up to six months in prison.

"The Trump administration’s policy raises the possibility that immigrants who are registered – regardless of lawful status – might be criminally charged and penalized for failing to carry proof of their registration with them at all times," according to an American Immigration Council analysis.

In the interim final rule published in the Federal Register, the administration quotes a law on the books since 1940 that requires "alien registration."

The requirement was used during World War II at a time when the U.S. government was worried about a "fifth column" of disloyal non-citizens, according to the lawsuit. It was later incorporated into the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.

It has remained in that law, unused, ever since.“

“Two election watchdog organizations sued President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday over his executive order seeking to overhaul the nation’s elections through a proof-of-citizenship requirement, new mail ballot deadline restrictions and other sweeping changes.

The lawsuit, filed by the Campaign Legal Center and the State Democracy Defenders Fund in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, asks the court to declare the order unconstitutional and stop it from being implemented. …”

The level of corruption is jaw dropping!!!

President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of a man who aided Republican efforts to impeach former President Joe Biden while serving a prison sentence of over 14 years for defrauding Native Americans and other investors.

A notice of clemency for Jason Galanis was released Monday by the Department of Justice, though the president signed the order Friday without a public announcement.
Galanis is the second associate of Hunter Biden who testified in the Republican impeachment inquiry to receive clemency in recent days from Trump, who has repeatedly used his executive power to reward allies or people he feels were unjustly treated by federal law enforcement.

The White House did not explain the rationale for granting clemency to Galanis, who was sentenced in August 2017 in federal court in New York to 14 years and five months in prison for his role in a bond scheme that defrauded the Oglala Sioux tribe and pension fund investors out of tens of millions of dollars.

“He and his codefendants engaged in market manipulation and the defrauding of shareholders, and they stole a large portion of the proceeds of tribal bonds that were intended to fund economic development projects,” Audrey Strauss, then-acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York said in a statement after the sentencing. “Now Jason Galanis has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term that reflects the magnitude and pervasiveness of his crimes.”
