CURRENT EVENTS - May 1 - May 6

Parody (or satire?) for the pre-K set?

The character debuted in 2005 per a Sesame Street Wiki, so was from his Apprentice era, but that hasn’t stopped this being used as Exhibit A for MAGA of political indoctrination…

They also had a character called Ronald Grump in 1988 who built towers of trash cans.

They obviously didn’t anticipate the power he would amass when they made an enemy of Trump.

No, that is inaccurate — the U.S. has been deporting hundreds of thousands of people a year previously. The Trump Administration got in its own way by trying to circumvent the limited due process for deportation and by just alleging criminality based on tattoos and guesswork (rather than focusing first on all the violent criminals in custody and arresting and trying alleged criminals if they want convictions). They skipped ahead to he looks sketchy, send him to a foreign prison without charges. That is the problem.

I support deportation of undocumented immigrants with no legal right to be here under applicable exceptions. I especially support rapid deportation of convicted criminals and anyone alleged to have committed a felony so long as they have some basic due process to test the allegations. I thought the mishandling of immigration was easily the most serious flaw in Biden Administration policy (and that is after being glad that he mostly resisted the frankly nutso lurch to the far left on immigration during the 2019-2020 Democratic primary — Kamala’s failure to resist that may have cost her the 2024 election as parroting left wing talking points in 2019 that were far more liberal than her prior positions made for easy campaign fodder, not to mention her being saddled with being the face of Biden Administration inaction on immigration).

I am not entirely clear where the lies end and ignorance begins with Trump sometimes. Is he really baffled by these decisions? Immigration is still his strongest issue and a little restraint and modulation would probably get him nearly 60% support on immigration. But I am a broken record about Trump throwing away golden political opportunities with both hands so far this term.

That last paragraph is 100% spot on and it’s why I really do think he’s declining quickly cognitively. He’s been a compulsive liar his whole life but something different is happening now. I think he genuinely doesn’t know what’s happening around him, partly because of disinformation he’s being fed by his advisors and partly because of his cognitive decline. At the risk of beating the deadest of horses, CAN ANYONE IMAGINE what would have been said about Biden if he flubbed the MS-13 photoshop thing like that???

“… Much of the work at NIOSH, an arm of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, had already stalled after an initial round of layoffs on April 1 at the agency ordered by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

New requests for investigations of firefighter injuries and workplace health hazards had already stopped being accepted. A CDC plan to help Texas schools curb the spread of measles infections was also scrapped due to the layoffs.

NIOSH employees receiving layoff notices late Friday included some workers for the World Trade Center Health Program, miner safety, and firefighter health programs. Some workers for those programs had been asked to temporarily return to work for another month or two, after pleas from members of Congress.

Among the layoffs to NIOSH's World Trade Center Health Program were nurses and scientists, two CDC officials said. Staff dealing with enrollment, member services and other administrative duties were also cut. …”

“… Stalled work includes changes needed to meet new standards issued by the National Fire Protection Association for this year. No equipment is currently certified to meet those standards, nor has the agency been able to issue refunds to application fees paid for by manufacturers.

Efforts to spot and warn of counterfeit personal protective equipment was also halted due to the layoffs, officials said. …”

John Fetterman’s Wife Reportedly Told Staff She Was at a ‘Breaking Point’

Gisele Fetterman has continued to publicly stand by her husband, but according to reporting from

New York Magazine

she and his former staffers are concerned about the Pennsylvania's senator's mental state.

There is definitely something wrong with him. He went from a firebrand, AOC-type progressive to a docile Trump apologist overnight.

I really do think that stroke re-wired his cognitive abilities.

The gauleiters fought, feuded and conspired all the time as well.
I learned a new word today - gauleiters. I love being about to touch a word on my screen and have the definition pop up! I also love being able to touch a word in what I write and have the correct spelling pop up.

Now do Sinema. You might be right about his cognitive abilities, but it's not exactly unprecedented for Dems to campaign as progressives and then wind up as something different. I don't know if they were faking when running, or corrupted after winning, but it happens.

This is another FAFO headline. Who benefits most from NIOSH studies, that eventually become regulation and oversight? It ain’t profs, lawyers, ngo directors, knowledge workers, etc.

Sinema was never progressive. She was always middle-of-the road, which is why she was able to defeat McSally in Arizona. Her entire purpose in politics was to use it to further her personal wealth and future opportunities outside of politics, and she realized early on that it’s easiest to do that when you straddle both sides of the aisle.

Not to quibble, because VE Day is obviously important, but WWII ended for the USA when the Japanese surrendered in August 1945 …

Anyway, May 8 is Victory Day already, Victory in Europe (VE Day), but fine Victory Day it is. November 11 was Armistice Day, then Veteran’s Day and now Victory Day WWI I guess?

Not early in her career in the AZ state house. That's how she got so many progressive fans in the first place. She really wanted to get things done.

I'm not sure the corruption really happened until she hit the Senate, and it might have been only after the pandemic. I remember reading an article about how Sinema was selling so much shit on facebook, presumably a whole bunch of stuff she bought online. Like, so much stuff (as I remember it) that it would burn though a Congressional salary in like 3 months.

Whatever the case, glad she's gone and hopefully Fetterman gets his shit together.
