There does seem to be an opportunity here to stabilize Syria, but it is frustrating to know how the GOP would effectively attack a Democratic President who took even more modest steps like this as a terrorist-loving wimp.

Only a couple of problems with this. We had no immigrations laws then and a higher percentage of immigrants than now. It did, in fact, include them and there was no possible way it was an oversight.

In 1865, immigrants represented a larger percentage of the US population than they do today. While the exact percentage varies depending on the source, estimates suggest immigrants made up around 14-15% of the population in 1865. Currently, immigrants constitute about 13.7% of the US population, according to recent estimates. This is slightly lower than the record level of 14.8% set in 1890.

I'll give credit where it's due -- starting his in-person foreign diplomacy with this trip was a very smart move by Trump and his team. The Abraham Accords were the only fruits of his first administration that moved the world in a positive direction, and he's wisely picking up where he left off. I can see a scenario in which all of this forces Iran to make a stabilizing deal, which is the main prize from a geopolitical perspective. And while I'm still wary about how Israel will respond, if Trump's team can get Iran under control, that may be enough for Israel.

The losers seem to be the Palestinians (definitely) and the Russians (possibly). Which may explain why Trump is so willing to give Putin everything he wants in Ukraine.

To be clear, Trump's foreign policy as a whole is disastrous for global stability and for our national security and global influence. But Trump seems to know how to relate to these Middle Eastern authoritarians, so we might as well pull for him to do some good with it.

Other "wins" surrounding this trip:

1. Given the body language of Trump and MBS, Trump likely convinced OPEC to continue pumping oil in large quantities in order to 1. keep prices low in US; and 2. drive the price of oil down to starve Russia into submission in Ukraine.

2. Momentum for the Abraham Accords.

3. Destruction of the Houthi Rebels - ending with their surrender.

4. American hostage in Gaza freed - likely with the help of Qatar

5. Massive new investments in the US - including huge order for Boeing.

6. Established personal relationships with the Gulf State Leaders and gave them the respect of official US visits.

One of the most successful state trips in recent memory. Even the state department types (David Ignatius) were sounding his praise this morning on MSNBC.

To be fair, the Qataris would have ordered those planes regardless of the presidential visit, but as I said in a prior post, I'm happy to give Trump credit for whatever he can accomplish in the Middle East. It puts us on the side of authoritarians and torturers, but I can accept the realpolitik of moving the pawns in that region. And the world will benefit from a deal with Iran, if he can pull it off.

The test will be his next trip. The Middle East is literally the only region of the world that stands to benefit from Trump 2.0 as it stands right now, so while I'll credit him for choosing a strategically smart first trip, the proof will be in the pudding with respect to what comes next.

We had a deal with Iran that had them under control and Trump ripped it up in his first term. I’m less prone to giving him credit for stabilizing a situation he was responsible for destabilizing in the first place. Israel wasn’t happy with the first Iran deal so I see no reason they would be happy with a new Iran deal.

I have seen this happen before to a large healthcare provider. They could be put on probation and have to implement procedures to make sure the fraud is ended. They could also get their Medicare license pulled. In that case, they are done.
