RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The legislative assistant to Republican Senator Norman Sanderson, Diane Cook, has been arrested and booked into the Wake County Detention Center.

Cook is accused of “willfully” and “maliciously” burning a house in the 8300 block of Boca Point in Raleigh, according to her arrest warrant. At the time of the burning, two individuals were inside the home, the warrant also said.

It is unclear how, if at all, Cook is connected to the people who live there.

Our struggle to handle violent mentally ill people is real and long overdue for serious overhaul. About 30 years ago I did a legal internship representing the mentally ill at Manhattan Psych on Wards Island. Shortly before I arrived, a patient who had been granted a day pass (NY judges rotated through a makeshift court at the asylum every week to provide access to legal representation without having to move the patients, many of whom were involuntarily committed and had long and often violent criminal histories) walked onto a subway platform and pushed a random person in front of an oncoming train.

It is questionable whether our (over-crowded) mental hospitals are humane and it is clear prisons are not. It takes weeks or even months to find a bed for a suicidal or violent person in a publicly funded mental health facility. So it’s not like we have a ready-made solution if only society would use it.
It seems like there has to be something available for extreme situations like this. The hospitals may not be perfect, but leaving someone like this wandering the streets doesn't seem humane for them or their victims.

The hospitals have no room to accommodate mental health patients for any substantial period of time. There are far too many of these people and nowhere near enough beds. Hospitals as they exist currently are not a solution.

I don’t really get too upset about what Trump does on a day to day basis. He’s so transactional that every day is a new day.

Mamdani asked for the Oval meeting. Trump graciously extended an invite and made sure the meeting was civil. Nobody played Trump as he’ll have no problem viciously attacking the mayor if he crosses Trump in the future.

Trump clearly has a soft spot for NYC snd wants the city to succeed regardless of who’s mayor.
Copium.

Trump got charmed. He’s under Mamdani’s spell.

How to give the mentally ill the assistance they need is the number one problem in the United States today. I've said, since the turn of the century, that - to paraphrase Du Bois - The problem of the twenty-first century is the problem of the mental health divide.

Mental illnesses are common in the United States and around the world. It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (59.3 million in 2022; 23.1% of the U.S. adult population). Mental illnesses include many different conditions that vary in degree of severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. Two broad categories can be used to describe these conditions: Any Mental Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental Illness (SMI). AMI encompasses all recognized mental illnesses. SMI is a smaller and more severe subset of AMI. Additional information on mental illnesses can be found on the NIMH Health Topics Pages.

Definitions
The data presented here are from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). For inclusion in NSDUH prevalence estimates, mental illnesses include those that are diagnosable currently or within the past year; of sufficient duration to meet diagnostic criteria specified within the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV); and, exclude developmental and substance use disorders.

Any Mental Illness

  • Any mental illness (AMI) is defined as a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder. AMI can vary in impact, ranging from no impairment to mild, moderate, and even severe impairment (e.g., individuals with serious mental illness as defined below).

Serious Mental Illness

  • Serious mental illness (SMI) is defined as a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder resulting in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities. The burden of mental illnesses is particularly concentrated among those who experience disability due to SMI.

Prevalence of Any Mental Illness (AMI)

  • Figure 1 shows the past year prevalence of AMI among U.S. adults.
    • In 2022, there were an estimated 59.3 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with AMI. This number represented 23.1% of all U.S. adults.
    • The observed prevalence of AMI was higher among females (26.4%) than males (19.7%).
    • Young adults aged 18-25 years had the highest prevalence of AMI (36.2%) compared to adults aged 26-49 years (29.4%) and aged 50 and older (13.9%).
    • The prevalence of AMI was highest among the adults reporting two or more races (35.2%), followed by White adults (24.6%). The prevalence of AMI was lowest among Asian adults (16.8%).
