Trump ‘giving very serious consideration’ to spinning off mortgage giants Fannie and Freddie

“… Many of Trump’s allies in the Republican Party have long advocated for ending the governmentconservatorship that Fannie and Freddie were placed under after their role in the 2008 global financial crisis. Government control of the two entities was intended to be temporary.

In fact, Trump attempted to untangle Fannie and Freddie from US government control in 2019 during his first administration and failed.

Fannie and Freddie essentially grease the wheels of America’s home lending market by buying mortgages from lenders and repackaging them for investors. This helps enable a reliable flow of money, allowing mortgage lenders to offer more affordable mortgage rates to would-be homebuyers.

Many experts credit the two entities with helping to prop up the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, the most popular type of home loan in the US due to its relatively low monthly payments compared to shorter-term loans.

Before 2008, Fannie and Freddie were private companies, backed by the US Treasury – though both were originally created by the government. They were placed under government control on September 7, 2008, after facing massive losses amid crashing home values that ignited the Great Recession. A week later, Lehman Brothers collapsed, sparking a global financial crisis.

Privatizing Fannie and Freddie could spook the investors who buy up mortgage loans, leading them to demand a higher return for their investments and pushing up mortgage rates, experts warn.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, estimated in 2024 that privatization could cost the typical American taking out a new mortgage between $1,800 and $2,800 per year….”

World leaders have a huge new problem: Trump’s Oval Office smackdowns

“It’s the new Hunger Games of world politics — the televised Oval Office take-down by President Donald Trump.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was the latest leader to become a MAGA prop Wednesday, as Trump lectured him on false claims that White South African farmers are the victims of a genocide.

… Trump’s dressings-down are a metaphor for a US foreign policy that is erratic, politicized and awash in conspiracy theories. As Ukraine and Jordan also found out, the more vulnerable a country, the more hostile a reception they tend to get.

… Ramaphosa knew what was coming. He was joined by his White agriculture minister in the new multiracial coalition government. Trump’s friends the South African major champion golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen were also drafted in. …

But that didn’t stop Trump dimming the lights and rolling out a multimedia show of right-wing propaganda about South Africa. “Death, death, death,” he said, as he displayed articles about the killings of White Afrikaners.

The question of more equitable land ownership is one of the most complex legacies of South Africa’s years of minority rule. But as Ramaphosa explained, there’s no systematic attempt to wipe out a community based on race or ethnicity — the definition of genocide. And most victims of violent crime are Black.…”
I’ve been thinking for a while now the Hunger Games are by far the best metaphor for what MAGA is doing right now.

Ex-congressional candidate gets 3 years for threatening to have opponent killed

“A former Florida Republican congressional candidate accused of stalking and plotting to have his primary opponent murdered by a purported foreign hit squad was sentenced Wednesday to three years in federal prison.

William Robert Braddock III, 41, of St. Petersburg, was sentenced in Tampa federal court, according to court records. He pleaded guilty in February to sending an interstate transmission of a threat to injure.

… During a June 2021 telephone call with Luna's friend, GOP activist Erin Olszewski, Braddock threatened to have Luna murdered by a "Russian-Ukrainian hit squad" if she continued to poll well in the race for the 13th District.

Politico reported at the time that Braddock said the hit squad could kill Luna within 24 hours.

"Luna's going to go down and I hope it's by herself," Braddock says in the recording, according to Politico, which said it had obtained the recording. "For the better or the good of the majority of the people, we've got to sacrifice the few."

According to Politico, Braddock described the "hit squad" as being armed for "close-battle combat" to make sure nothing was left to chance.

There was no evidence that Braddock, a former Marine, had such contacts in foreign organized crime or took any steps to carry out a murder plot.…”

“…MEANWHILE IN THE WHITE HOUSE

COINING IT IN:
As jaw-dropping presidential activity goes, this one takes some beating.

Tonight, Trump will host more than 200 wealthy crypto bros for a private “dinner with the president” as a special reward for their $400 million investment in his personal memecoin. Trump will head to his D.C.-area golf club at 7 p.m. as the star guest at what the distressingly garish official website describes as “the most exclusive invitation in the world.” Black tie is preferred, the invite says, but not obligatory. Good to know.

And there’s more: The 25 biggest investors will also be invited to a small VIP reception with the president ahead of tonight’s gala dinner. A quick glance at the website leaves no doubt that these events have been explicitly designed to sell as much $TRUMP crypto as possible. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) described “the Trump coin scam” as “the most brazenly corrupt thing a president has ever done.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) has called itan “unprecedented pay-to-play scheme to provide access to the presidency to the highest bidder.”

But to be clear: These memecoins are sold on exchange markets; that money does not go to Trump directly. And the invitations for the dinner state Trump is “appearing as a guest and not soliciting any funds for it.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt — who, helpfully, has a press briefing at 1 p.m. today — has said Trump is “abiding by all conflict-of-interest laws.” So … that’s alright then?

Erm, no: About 80 percent of $TRUMP coins are held by Trump Organization affiliates, and so in theory if their value soars those holdings should become more valuable. And per NBC News, the 220 “winning” investors at tonight’s dinner have collectively spent an extraordinary $394 million between them, with several spending more than $10 million a head. Bloomberg reckons many of them are likely based overseas. POLITICO’s Declan Harty has more detail on who’ll be there.

Needless to say … It’s hard to think of anything remotely comparable in the annals of recent presidential history. Bill Clinton letting political donors sleep in the Lincoln Bedroom? Hunter Biden trying to sell his paintings? None if it comes close to a $400 million personal crypto scheme with the president’s face slapped on it.…”

BIDEN CRIME FAMILY!!!!11111111

LMAO…. So much drama.

Any thoughts on the Pro-Palestinian terror attack last night?
Horrible and should be punished to the fullest extent the law allows. I’m sure one of your prior usernames would remember I’ve been outraged about all violence in the Israel-Palestinian conflict from the start. Would be nice if our governing party was so principled.

The presidential pardon is coming in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

You the books about them yet? Or are you choosing to ignore them and pretend that what’s being written didn’t happen?

Oh..Trump has 3.5 years left and will retain the House next Fall.

The left is doing more to help him than the GOP is!
Sure Jan GIF

There's a very short and direct line from the anti-semitic campus "protests" and the execution of this young Israeli couple. The killer even looks like a grungy, Marxist grad student or associate professor with his red kafeefe and stupid "Free Free Palestine" slogan. So glad we have an Administration who is clamping down on these student groups who disrupt Universities. These groups, led by people like Mahmoud Khalil, are nothing more than foreign sleeper cells - with useful idiot students. This is nothing short of domestic terrorism.

The only consolation is that his virtue signaling chant and Palestinian accessory is likely to land him the death penalty.

LOL!! You also said the Trump wasn’t going to be POTUS again.

How’d that work out for you?
I don't remember saying that, but maybe I did. I assumed that voters would see through Trump's bullshit. I assumed that his disaster of a first term would scare off voters. I assumed that Jan6 was a deal breaker for folks who value the peaceful transer of power. I underestimated how potent the poison of right wing media is. I underestimated the stupidity, ignorance and cruelty of American voters.

How'd that work out for me? My life hasn't changed. That doesn't mean I don't sympathize with the folks who have had thier lives turned upside down by this clown show of an administration. It's not just that Trump is a know nothing con man. It's not just that he's using his office to enrich himself and his oligarch backers. He's filled his administration with the most unqualified morons possible.

Trump is and always has been a chiseler, and you fell for it. I should pity you, but I don't. You're a mark. Fuck Trump. Fuck Elon. Fuck the fascist MAGA movement.

Seahorses. Forever.
