"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past," repeated Winston obediently. "Who controls the present controls the past," said O'Brien, nodding his head with slow approval. 'Is it your opinion, Winston, that the past has real existence?'

Inflation Rose to 2.4% in May, In Line With Expectations

Defies fears that tariff impact would start to show a rise in prices

“… Consumer prices were up 2.4% in May from a year earlier, the Labor Department said Wednesday, hotter than April’s gain of 2.3%.

That year-over-year number was in line with the 2.4% rise expected by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal.

By some other measures, inflation was below expectations.

Prices excluding food and energy categories—the so-called core measure economists watch in an effort to better capture inflation’s underlying trend—rose 2.8%, below forecasts for a 2.9% increase.

The monthly increase in prices last month was also milder than expected by economists.…”

It looks like building up inventory was a smart business move in trying to get ahead of the tariffs. My guess is the rubber will meet the road 4-5 months from now heading into the holiday season.

Will we have actual meaningful trustworthy trade deals ?
Will we have adequate inventory to stock the shelves ?
Will the unemployment rate hold steady ?
Will the CPI hold steady ?

If so, then we will have a very merry Xmas 🤩
If not, then there will be a lot of coal in those Xmas stockings 😡

Sounds like at least one person might support and appreciate national guard being deployed.

L.A. Police Chief Admits Officers ‘Overwhelmed’ as Thousands of Rioters Block Freeway, Torch Cars

Thousands of anti-ICE rioters descended on a major freeway in Los Angeles Sunday evening, blocking traffic in both directions, while rioters downtown set off fireworks and torched several self-driving cars.

One day after President Trump deployed 2,000 National Guardsmen to the city — over the objections of Governor Gavin Newsom and other California Democrats who have insisted they have the situation in hand — Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell admitted that his officers were “overwhelmed” by the scale of the riots, which have continued for four consecutive days in Los Angeles.

“We are overwhelmed,” McDonnell said at a Sunday evening press conference. “Tonight, we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers. That can kill you.”

“They’ll take a backpack, and the backpack will have a cinderblock in it,” he continued. “They’ll break up the cinderblock and use that, pass it around to throw at officers, to throw at cars and other people.”

This so stupid. Let's day this is true. How long would the have to live in the bunkers? Who will grow their food? Who will clean their houses? Who will basically TAKE CARE of them?
They already have small armies of undocumented immigrants at work in the bunkers. They have underground farms to grow food; the grow lights are powered by the New Green Deal.

Example #10,000 of why we are being led by people that are genuinely crazy. Yes, during the Cold War our government (Republicans included) built a massive underground bunker (in West Virginia, I believe) to which the government could go and supposedly survive a Soviet nuclear attack, but the notion that "elites" have numerous underground bunkers and are just waiting to nuke the planet - so they can completely destroy everything that made them "elite" in the first place - is just unhinged, batshit crazy Dale Gribble-level conspiracy thinking. And yet this person is currently the Director of National Intelligence. A frightening thought, or at least it ought to be to anyone with a functioning brain.

Seriously the elites have everything they could possibly want, why would they want to live out their remaining life in an underground bunker?

DOJ finds Trump can abolish areas protected as national monuments

An opinion released by the Office of Legal Counsel concludes the president can abolish national monuments declared by past administrations.

“… The May 27 document, which reverses a legal opinion issued in 1938, could be laying the groundwork for Trump to abolish or dramatically shrink national monuments, which confer federal protections to millions of acres of federal land, much of it in the American West.

Such a move would take the administration into untested legal territory.

… In laying out the administration’s position, the opinion from the department’s Office of Legal Counsel primarily analyzes the Chuckwalla and Sáttítla national monuments, which President Joe Biden designated just before leaving office.

… The Washington Post first reported in April that Trump administration officials in the Interior Department were studying whether to scale back at least six national monuments. The administration’s aim in doing so, according to a person briefed on the plan who spoke on the condition of anonymity because a final decision had not been made, is to free up more land for oil drilling and mining, building on Trump’s declaration of a “national energy emergency.”…”

"It could easily be accomplished with a computer. And a computer could be set and programmed to accept factors from youth, health, sexual fertility, intelligence, and a cross section of necessary skills. Of course it would be absolutely vital that our top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required principles of leadership and tradition. Naturally, they would breed prodigiously, eh? There would be much time, and little to do. But ah with the proper breeding techniques and a ratio of say, ten females to each male, I would guess that they could then work their way back to the present gross national product within say, twenty years."

ETA: Needless to say, Elon Musk has already started on the 10:1 ratio thing. And he wants his bunker to be on Mars. I was always wondering if Elon was going to interrupt a Cabinet meeting by standing up and screaming, "Mein Fuhrer, I can walk!"

Trump to ramp up transfers to Guantánamo, including citizens of allies

Plans show the administration is preparing to send thousands of foreigners to the infamous detention facility, including people from Britain, France and Italy, with no intent to notify their home governments.

🎁 —> https://wapo.st/43DKuRC

“… The foreign nationals under consideration hail from a range of countries. They include hundreds from friendly European nations, including Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey and Ukraine, but also other parts of the world, including many from Haiti.

Officials shared the plans with The Washington Post, including some documents, on the condition of anonymity because the matter is considered highly sensitive.

The administration is unlikely to inform the foreigners’ home governments about the impending transfers to the infamous military facility, including close U.S. allies such as Britain, Germany and France, the officials said.

… The preparations include medical screening for 9,000 individuals to determine whether they are healthy enough to be sent to Guantánamo, notorious for its history as a prison for suspected terrorists and others captured on battlefields in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Some of these details were reported earlier by Politico.…”

Wut? This seems so weird (to sue a coffee shop for its beverage names) I wanted more info:

Per DOJ, “… Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that on two separate occasions, Harara ordered Jewish customers — identified because they were wearing baseball caps with Stars of David on them — to leave the coffee house. During one incident, an employee told a Jewish customer who was trying to make a purchase, “You’re the guy with the hat. You’re the Jew. You’re the Zionist. We don’t want you in our coffee shop. Get out.” During another incident, Harara accused another Jewish customer who was with his five-year-old son of wearing a “Jewish star,” being a “Zionist,” and supporting “genocide.” Harara repeatedly demanded that the customer and his son leave and falsely accused them of “trespassing” to the Oakland police. Neither customer stated anything about their political views to Harara or any other employees while at the coffee house.

The lawsuit also alleges that, on the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, the Jerusalem Coffee House announced two new drinks: “Iced In Tea Fada,” an apparent reference to “intifada,” and “Sweet Sinwar,” an apparent reference to Yahya Sinwar, the former leader of Hamas who orchestrated the attacks on Israel. The lawsuit further alleges that the coffee house’s exterior side wall displays inverted red triangles, a symbol of violence against Jews that has been spraypainted on Jewish homes and synagogues in anti-Semitic attacks. …”
