“The Trump administration has declined to release nearly $7 billion in federal funding that helps pay for after-school and summer programs, support for students learning English, teacher training and other services.

The money was expected to be released by Tuesday. But in an email on Monday, the Education Department notified state education agencies that the money would not be available.

The administration offered little explanation, saying only that the funds were under review. It gave no timeline for when, or if, the money would be released, saying instead that it was “committed to ensuring taxpayer resources are spent in accordance with the president’s priorities.”

The frozen funds are unrelated to the millions of dollars in cuts included in the domestic policy bill that squeaked through the Senate on Tuesday.…”
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
“committed to ensuring taxpayer resources are spent in accordance with the president’s priorities.”

The audio isn't very good but anyone who Trump refers to as Rand Paul Jr is probably considerably more intelligent than Trump.

As far as I can tell, ran is literally the only person in Congress that legitimately cares about fiscal responsibility and is willing to vote accordingly.

My neighbor is Mormon and returned from his 2 year mission in Brazil a few months ago. Since he grew up in the US, in an English speaking family, he didn't speak a word of Portuguese.

Before he left on his mission, he did a multi-month, emersive course to learn Portuguese.

He didn't move to Brazil and expect Brazil to pay to teach him Portuguese.

Ah, yes. I see equivalence.

I would assume your neighbor is an adult. I further assume your neighbor is an adult of some means. I also believe it is likley true that your neighbor made the decision voluntarily to travel to Brazil of his own free will. Are those assumptions incorrect?

And I know this may be shocking, but you do realize that we teach the English language to native English speakers, correct?

🤷‍♂️

Classes are taught twice a week, in person.
Immigrants aged 18 and older who are interested in learning Portuguese free of charge can sign up for the project Portas Abertas – Português para Imigrantes (“Open Doors – Portuguese for Immigrants”), promoted by São Paulo’s city government.
The initiative is already underway in all regions of the city. The classes are taught in 11 municipal schools and immigrants can enroll at the school where they plan to study at any point of the semester, regardless of the status of their migration and documentation.
Divided into three modules—basic, intermediate, and advanced—the course has in-person classes twice a week, featuring its own learning material for each module and activities with discussions about fighting racism, sexism, and respect for gender diversity.

Social inclusion

“The teaching of the Portuguese language is among the main tools for welcoming immigrants, as it promotes inclusion and makes social life possible, along with the creation and maintenance of community ties. It is a way to promote civic participation and ensure access to public services,” said Bryan Rodas, coordinator of Policies for Immigrants and the Promotion of Decent Work from São Paulo's Secretariat of Human Rights and Citizenship.
The documents required for the enrollment are identification—issued in Brazil or in the country of origin—and proof of residence. If the student lacks the latter, they may fill out a declaration of residence. To obtain the certificate for a module, students must attend at least 75 percent of the classes of the semester. Classes in each module total 90 hours.
