An annex to a report by the special counsel John H. Durham was the latest in a series of disclosures about the Russia inquiry, as the Trump team seeks to distract from the Jeffrey Epstein files.

“… The information, a 29-page annex to the special counsel’s 2023 report, reveals that a foundational document for that theory was most likely stitched together by Russian spies. The document is a purported email from July 27, 2016, that said Mrs. Clinton had approved a campaign proposal to tie Mr. Trump to Russia to distract from the scandal over her use of a private email server.

The release of the annex adds new details to the public’s understanding of a complex trove of 2016 Russian intelligence reports analyzing purported emails that Russian hackers stole from Americans. It also shows how the special counsel, John H. Durham, went to great lengths to try to prove that several of the emails were real, only to ultimately conclude otherwise. …”

Here is why GQP leaders are telling their fellow GQPers to avoid meeting with their constituents during the August recess.

Unfortunately, this poor GQPer did not heed the warning...

Millions of Student-Loan Borrowers Prepare for Higher Payments

Some are looking for new repayment options, with interest on the federal SAVE plan set to start accruing again Friday

“…
Interest was set to start accruing again Friday for the nearly eight million people enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education Plan, or SAVE. The Education Department said it is making the change to comply with a federal court injunction that blocked the plan, which was introduced under the Biden administration.

The loans remain in forbearance while courts decide SAVE’s future, meaning borrowers still aren’t required to make monthly payments.

But the change, coupled with the Trump administration’s plan to eventually phase out the program as part of a retreat from federal student loans, has some borrowers casting about for different options.…”

The Senate’s Plans to Get Out of Town Are Currently in ‘the Ditch’

“It looked like it was trending in the right direction. And then, as you know, the wheels come off,” Thune said Thursday.

“…
At the center of the impasse: judicial and executive branch nominees. Republicans want Democrats to cut a deal to speed up confirmations.

Democrats insist they’re simply giving Republicans the same treatment they received when Joe Biden was president.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) put it bluntly: “I know they would like to return to those golden years when there were groups of nominees considered, but we weren’t given that courtesy by them when they were in the same position we are.”

Now Republicans are threatening to change the Senate rules on confirmations — not because of principle, but because they want to go home.“

Palantir Is Extending Its Reach Even Further Into Government

Palantir has become one of the few winners in the Trump administration’s cost-cutting efforts, offering other contractors a lifeline while consolidating its own reach and power.

“… Instead of replacing these more traditional contractors, Palantir’s software is becoming the core tool deployed by them in government systems, placing Palantir in a newly central role.

… The White House itself is thrilled by this partnership: “The Trump Administration has high-standard [sic] when spending American’s hard-earned tax dollars—which is why agencies have partnered with Palantir, a top-tier American company renowned for their longstanding history of innovation, results, and increasing government efficiency,” says White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers.

Palantir struck some of these deals prior to Trump taking office as well. In December of last year, Booz Allen partnered with Palantirspecifically, working together on building out defense IT infrastructure.

“To have one company monopolize and become the gatekeeper of software in the government, to become an ‘app factory,’ for the government, in a sense, where they're in every agency, they're part of the defense complex and the intelligence complex, brings huge concerns regarding fairness, regarding competition, and puts Palantir in a very unique position that maybe has never existed,” says Juan Sebastián Pinto, a former Palantir employee and critic of the company.”

So, I've been working really hard recently to make sure I'm not just reflexively opposing everything Trump does. That's not fair, and it puts me in the same category as the people who reflexively defend everything he does. So here's my contribution for today, keying off the current events thread that has been locked.

The White House complex should have a ballroom/large gathering space. Trump is right about that. It's ridiculous we've had to host governmental events in tents. The White House has plenty of land. Adding a very large gathering space befitting our place in this world is well worth it.

I don't even care if taxpayer funds are used to pay for it. We're not a podunk banana republic and we should be able to pay for things that convey an appropriate image to the world.

I really hope Trump doesn't do gold-plated toilets and shit like that, but this is a good thing for the country. And I'll give Trump credit for it if he can get it done.

I can tell you have experience doing oral arguments, lol. Have to concede something, but as little as possible.

A pattern is emerging in Texas that local officials are always to blame for catastrophes — see Uvalde school shooting and Walmart massacre for examples. Which may be accurate in no small part because the state doesn’t provide many services outside law enforcement.

Which is essentially the model Trump wants to replace FEMA — eliminate federal service and let each state figure it out. Pass the buck downstream — you are never to blame if you never promise to protect citizens in a natural or man-made disaster.

So now Trump orders nuclear submarines to appropriate regions. He's a little pissed at Russia's Medvedev. Comforting knowing Trump doesn't take social media bantering serious.
