My first thought was that these would be predominantly black churches, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I would suggest he is a political eunuch, not a court jester.

Court jesters were intelligent, witty entertainers, and sometimes made jokes to amuse the king that would mask an underlying criticism of the king.

Whatever its value is becomes meaningless because it’s not like you can sell it to someone without getting caught. And if you just want to have it, it’s not like you can ever display it. When you have more money than you will ever be able to use, it all just comes down to keeping score. Doesn't matter if anyone ever sees it, because it'all just a prop for their fragile egos. Whenever being the "bad guy" gets you down, you just go in your private vault and stare at Napoleon's crown or something.

Yeah, it just seems weird to steal those items to do that. At the end of the day, gold is gold. It doesn’t matter if it came from “priceless” items taken from the Louvre. But taking items from the louvre will draw a lot more attention than taking items from somewhere else. And what about situations where such heists involve works of art, like paintings? You can’t melt those down.
