Dehumanizing people should not be allowed here.

Multiple times in the last weeks I have seen "the illegal" or "illegals" as a casual reference to humans. It's bullshit. Ban the fuckers already.

There are plenty of ways to discuss humans without some intentionally degrading sophomoric hogwash.
I used it today when I said something to the effect of a baby born as an illegal with regards to ending birthright citizenship. If anyone took that to mean I was calling them that then I am sorry. My intent was the use language that they use to make a point of the absurdity in ending birthright citizenship while also labeling anyone here who is not a legal resident as an "illegal."

I doubt that that was what prompted this but just in case I wanted to make it clear my intent was to defend undocumented immigrants.

That's one of the primary reasons I hate it in discourse. The point of those using it intentionally is to normalize it and somehow make it OK. I grew up thinking n*gger was perfectly appropriate because it was casually used around me all the time. The more we use slurs in society, the more accepted they become even by those who mean no offense in using them. I detest the use of illegal alien but at least it has a definition that's plausible. When someone reduces a human being to just being "illegal" period, I can't abide that.

Do you have a problem using the term “spreadnecks” to describe Covid deniers?

This board shouldn’t be the ZZL round 2. Bans should be for absolutely egregious behavior, and should be incredible rare. The ignore feature exists for a reason.
Never heard it. I don't even know what it means to be honest.

I mean, but, I used it for a specific purpose to point out the inhumanity of its use. I couldn't make that point without using the word.

Would quotes around the word help?

Im not complaining about your use. Sorry if it seemed that way. I'm saying that you had to use it in that manner to point it out...all because if was being used in the first place.

I've never been a fan of the ban, and I have not seen a post here that is so egregious that it warrants a ban.

That said, I agree with wmheel that describing humans as "illegals" is very offensive which is why I choose not to describe Trump and his minions as "illegals" for the many illegal acts they are committing on a daily basis

Kind of like you can commit a felony, or your actions can be felonious, but you can't be a felon.
illegally entering the U.S. (8 U.S.C. § 1325) is a misdemeanor, while illegally re-entering after deportation (8 U.S.C. § 1326) is a felony.

So they're aren't felons (unless they are deported and re-enter the US).

that's not what he's getting at.

he thinks its a gotcha. felon is widely used and legally accurate and also dehumanizing.

eta: and as WM has pointed out, its a noun so not quite the same at all as "illegals" but we can always count on zen to bring the BS around here.
