Obama would not necessarily win. That's not an election contest I relish AT ALL.
Agree. Obama’s lost more than a step or two. He was not helpful this campaign, with the low point being his “lecture” to black men to vote for Kamala. He was also part of the coup that isn’t aging well.

He needs to stay on Martha’s Vineyard/Hawaii with his wealthy buddies.

How Trump Could Defy the Constitution — or Find a Loophole — and Seize a Third Term

“… “Anyone who says that obviously the 22nd Amendment will deter Trump from trying for a third term has been living on a different planet than the one I’ve been living on,” says Ian Bassin, who was an associate White House counsel for President Barack Obama and is now the executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Protect Democracy.

If Trump decided he wanted to hold onto power past 2028, there are at least four paths he could try:

  • He could generate a movement to repeal the 22nd Amendment directly.
  • He could exploit a little-noticed loophole in the amendment that might allow him to run for vice president and then immediately ascend back to the presidency.
  • He could run for president again on the bet that a pliant Supreme Court won’t stop him.
  • Or he could simply refuse to leave — and put a formal end to America’s democratic experiment.
Each path would face serious political, legal and practical impediments. But the prospect of a third Trump term shouldn’t be dismissed with a hand wave.

Trump, after all, is definitely not dismissing the prospect. He’s been openly floating it for years. …”

The only realistic path is #2 (to run as VP) and I'm not sure why he would choose any of the other paths when that one is available. The other paths will all fail, IMO. #2 is not only he easiest but candidly I'm not sure what the argument is that it's not legal. The only real challenge (besides winning the election) is deciding who will run at the top of the ticket as Trump's patsy.

In any event I'm not particularly worried about this possibility at this point. There is too much focus on Trump specifically as a danger to Democracy when the people around him are the ones you really need to worry about. They don't need to abolish democracy (which would inspire a huge backlash) when they can kill it by death with a thousands cuts instead (which they're doing now and which most MAGAs are too stupid to understand anyway).

I actually agree with you about not being particularly worried about this one at the moment. But this popped up today and seemed to take the idea seriously, so thought I would add it to the existing thread.

Still mostly joking/trolling, but he keeps saying it (which is what trolls do but also what despots do to ease people into acceptance of initially shocking ideas).

Obama would kill Trump head to head. It wouldn’t even be close. In fact, the more Trump continues to adhere to the Project 2025 playbook, the better Obama will look to the citizens of this country. Hell, Biden’s popularity will even increase by the time 2028 rolls around.

The issue with Obama isn’t if he would beat Trump. He’d destroy him. The issue is that he wouldn’t run again, even if to prevent a Trump dictatorship. After two terms of having to put the country back together following a Republican president breaking it, he wouldn’t have the stomach to do it again.

After years of treating his trolling efforts as "he'll never do that", I've learned to take every word that comes out of his mouth as "he'll definitely do that".

i ll be shocked if the iraqis or one of the blue sheep maniacs doesnt get to him before then.

prob the chinese or russians will do it and make it look like the iraqis that would be awesome

Yeah. I'm not seeing it either at this early date. I could see him running as vice president with the explicit promise that whoever was the president would resign on the first day and let him become president. But I can't see him winning. Trump sounds great to a lot of Americans until Trump becomes president and starts doing Trump things.

This is precisely how he worked MAGA folks into believing that the election was stolen/rigged.

He repeated the claims/lies over several years, starting back in 2016…so by the time November 2020 rolled around, MAGA folks had heard it so much on FOX, OANN, Twitter, FB, etc that they truly believed there was no way Trump could lose unless Dems cheated.

The Iraqis? What the hell are you talking about?

I don't think don's ego would allow for even this banal workaround.
