“Eat the Rich” memes spread, but is it a political movement?

This may be an unpopular opinion here, but I see resisting the rise of a populist left counter-movement to be just about as important for the Dems over the next 4-8 years as resisting the immensely dangerous populists on the right.
Nah fam. We have tried neoliberalism and this is where it takes us.

There's no future for left leaning social movements without left leaning economic movements.

Democrats can resist left wing populism, or they can win elections.

600 million dollars for a wedding. Are you fucking kidding me? Imagine how far that money would go to help out those needing it. Fucking disgusting.
Likely also false. Bezos has already come out and called it ridiculous. The New York Post was the initial reporting and they cite a "report" but don't link it or attribute it to anybody.

It also really doesn't pass the smell test. What are you going to spend $600 million on? Imagine almost anything you could think of and short of giving every guest a house as a gift, I don't think it's realistic.

In re: The Rich just keep getting richer. You have to wonder that if the rich had know how easy it was going to be to manipulate and co-op the tax system so that the burden of running the country would fall disproportionately on the poor and middle classes, would they have enthusiastically supported ratification of the 16th Amendment?
Does this look like the poor and middle class are paying disproportionately?
I think I've about worn a hole in the internet googling this stuff. The poor don't pay squat in income taxes, thanks to George W. Bush. They pay some sales tax imposed by the states and SS, for which they receive an oversized benefit in relation to what they pay in.

High-Income Taxpayers Paid the Highest Average Income Tax Rates

In 2021, taxpayers with higher incomes paid much higher average income tax rates than taxpayers with lower incomes.

The bottom half of taxpayers, or taxpayers making under $46,637, faced an average income tax rate of 3.3 percent. As household income increases, average income tax rates rise. For example, taxpayers with AGI between the 10th and 5th percentiles ($169,800 and $252,840) paid an average income tax rate of 14.3 percent—four times the rate paid by taxpayers in the bottom half.

The top 1 percent of taxpayers (AGI of $682,577 and above) paid the highest average income tax rate of 25.93 percent—nearly eight times the rate faced by the bottom half of taxpayers.

High-Income Taxpayers Paid the Majority of Federal Income Taxes

In 2021, the bottom half of taxpayers earned 10.4 percent of total AGI and paid 2.3 percent of all federal individual income taxes. The top 1 percent earned 26.3 percent of total AGI and paid 45.8 percent of all federal income taxes.

In all, the top 1 percent of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes paid than the bottom 90 percent combined. The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid more than $1 trillion in income taxes while the bottom 90 percent paid $531 billion.

While you're not wrong, you are greatly ignoring how the rich play on the bigotries of race, religion and sexual orientation to divide and distract the lower classes from focusing on the real issues of class and wealth. It's an old strategy but still a very effective one.
This. No matter how poor they are, as long as their are minorities and gays to look down on, it makes them feel superior

I think one problem is the A in AGI. You can look at Trump as example one. Of the tax returns that have been released, he takes paper losses most years and pays almost no tax. There are many years where he would not be considered in the top 1% of income earners and a year or two where he wouldn't be in the top 90% while he is almost certainly in the top .1% of wealth. And he's not doing anything that most other really rich people don't do.

If you are taking a wage whether its the janitor or the CEO, you are paying taxes on it. If you are making income in other ways, and the cost to hire tax advisors is lower than your potential tax bill, you likely aren't.

I also think that the 1% slogan, while catchy, really doesn't do a very good job of capturing the issue. 1% in America is making a little over 500k a year. That's a lot but it doesn't touch with the truly wealthy are making.

Couple of tidbits I've heard recently, possibly on here so apologies if I'm stealing anything from anybody:

-What's the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire? A billion dollars.

- 1 million minutes is a little under 2 years. 1 billion minutes is 1,900 years that's the scale of the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire.

I don't think the 1% is the problem. It's the .1% and .01% that needs to be looked at with a different capital gains tax strategy and estate taxes. Some more favorable Union and worker protection laws would help too.
but the bottom 75% are voting for the .01% because the .0001% can buy the votes

So shoot rich people in the back of the head as they walk to meetings?
[watch you do not get what you deserve] [MOD Note - if this is a joke I missed it — it sounds like a threat, which would cross a red line here — leaving it up for now in case I just misunderstood irony or something]

Comparison would be more interesting if it included FICA taxes. For self-employed or contractors under the $100k+ cutoff, they are already at 16% before the income tax is even added.

We arent talking about the top 1% here. We are talking about dividing that percentage by a factor of 100. Those folks aren't paying shit as compared to their wealth and income.

Every Billionaire should be subject to an annual 15% total wealth tax as a bare minimum. Concentrating that much financial power into such a small group of people is historically exceptionally dangerous for society.

Wait, so you're saying that people that make more money pay more income taxes? Wow, who would have ever thought such a thing...

As someone mentioned the income tax is based off of AGI.

I wonder how many people making $20 an hour and struggling to pay rent are able to make the proper financial moves to keep their adjusted gross down.

If I made $700K a year and paid $200K in federal income taxes, I'm still living better than a person making under $100K. PERIOD.

But then consider that the $700K AGI might be a net income of well over $1M. Which probably allows them money to invest that isn't taxed due to unrealized capital gains or other tax avoidance strategies that one has to have money to actually take advantage of.

Lyndon Johnson said it almost six decades ago, and it's still true - "I'll tell you what's at the bottom of it...If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Where LBJ was wrong was he said that the Democrats had given the South to the Republicans for a generation upon signing the Civil Rights Acts.

It wasn’t A generation……and it’s three going on four generations.

It wasn’t just the South. It was working class whites nationwide.
