It was back when I was in 5th grade. We were rehearsing for our school performance of Annie. I played Rooster, the bad guy who tried to scam Warbucks into thinking he was Annie's father. My "girlfriend" played the role of Warbucks' secretary. Well, there was this blind kid in our grade who had a crush on my girlfriend. So, I was backstage one day while we were rehearsing, and coming around the curtains on the stage. As soon as I walked around the corner...BAM! I got punched right in the nose. I saw stars for a couple of seconds, and then when I refocused I saw the blind kid there and the guy who was playing Warbucks. Warbucks tells me to stay away from the girl, because the blind kid liked her. I just walked past them and went to a teacher and told her what happened.
 
In high school, one of my friends popped me in the mouth as kind of a joke (well, we all laughed, anyway). 35 years later, I lost the tooth.

Almost without exception the nastiest school fights I ever saw (Jr High , mid 60s, Guy B Phillips , Chapel Hill) were among very angry young ladies... Ripping out Hoop pierce earrings was a favorite
 
In 10th grade I was waiting for the bus when I heard a commotion behind me. I turned and caught a fist square on the jaw. Someone was running and being chased - the runner just slugged me as he went past.

My vision wobbled and my knees buckled but I didn't fall down. I was more confused than hurt at the time. Had a good bruise for a few days.

Almost all of the fights in my wife's middle school are girl fights. Usually ending with various weaves and other hair accessories strewn about. The boys get more aggressive in high school but in middle school most of the aggression is amongst the girls.
 
5th grade got open handed smacked on the bus by a kid ~100lbs heavier than me. Turned out it was essentially the fifth grade version of a “hit” put on me by a neighborhood “rival”. I saw stars for a second, then proceeded to leap like that deranged chimpanzee this board has recently discussed to an odd degree.

Before we got manhandled by the bus driver, I had the wind knocked out of me (literally got stomped) but I had bit the kid’s middle finger so hard his finger nail ripped off. I was undoubtedly more beat up, but he was the one crying like punk in front of all the other kids, and had to wear a big bandage on his finger for a couple of weeks.

I definitively lost the physical battle, but won the elementary PR war.

The next year at football practice that kid shoved a handful of mud into my mouth and eyes, at the bottom of a pile.

I was listening to the Diane Ream show on WUNC radio one day. The topic was school violence. She had four vice principals as guests. Two men and two women. One of the men said when boys get in a fight it usually works out that one doesn’t want to be in the fight as much as the other. He said you get in the first kid’s face so he doesn’t lose face with his peers. One of the women said girl fights were much worse. Diane Reams said,”Really.” All four emphatically said yes. That woman said when two girls get in a fight each has the same idea. “I’m going to kill that bitch.”

I haven't been sucker punched but I did have a friend cut me with a church key when we were in high school. We were in the back seat of a car going home after a concert. I don't remember the specifics of the argument we got into. We were inebriated .

I punched him and he drew blood almost as much as me. Our buddies in the front seat pulled into a truck stop. We cleaned our wounds and made up. We were good on the rest of way home.

No, but I accidentally sucker punched a kid on the last day of school in 7th grade.

We were in gym and were just sitting in the gym bleachers since it was the last day. This kid, Robin, was a row behind and kept punching me in the arm. I kept telling him to stop and finally had enough so I stood up and was going to punch him as hard as possible in the arm but I missed and got him directly in the nose. He immediately started bleeding and ran to the bathroom. Coach came in and saw it and ended up giving us both spankings.

(BTW, this coach was a big guy. You didn't want a spanking from him. To put it in perspective, he came from my town which doesn't have a football program but because of his size and speed was offered a football scholarship from Oklahoma State. It is an interesting story as my dad was the principal at the time and told us how the OSU coaches showed up, marked 40 yards off on the baseball field, and had him run it. This was in 1969 I believe, not something you would see at a div 1 program today.)

I spent that entire summer scared to go back to school because I thought Robin was going to kick my butt the first day. It was a tiny town but I managed to avoid him all summer.

I'm not sure if this is sucker punched, and I don't want to tell the whole boring story but I got punched twice by a UNC wrestler my junior year - I think he was an All-American out of Texas - really without provocation (from me). I had been shooting tequila, and I'm not/was not a violent drunk, I was trying to make peace. He round-housed me twice, never really saw it coming; I would not have remained standing without the help of Pepe Lopez. Fortunately someone broke us up or I would have really got my ass kicked.
 
I've been sucker punched twice, both in HS.

One was at a fight in the parking lot at school. One of my friends got himself in a fight with another dude and a bunch of us circled around to watch. One of the other guy's friends thought we had jumped his friend and came in just throwing hands at everyone. The punch I took was mostly just a glancing blow right behind my left ear, but it knocked me a little off-balance as I wasn't expecting it. Dude realized it was a 1-on-1 fight just about the time folks registered what he was doing and he got dragged off by a couple of guys taking a few blows as he went. The funniest part was that it interrupted the original fight and that was the end of the whole thing.

The other was at a field party. I was talking to a girl who had just broken up with her ex and he wasn't happy about it. The ex had just arrived, saw us talking, and he came straight at us to hit me squarely in the back of the head. It definitely hurt and I went down. On the ground I tried to recover quickly but he apparently didn't really have a plan after hitting me. A couple of other guys quickly grabbed him and held him back until he agreed to leave the party. I had a pretty nice headache afterward, but nothing else. The girl was so upset she and her friends left the party pretty soon afterward and nothing else happened with her. The dude that hit me found me at school on Monday and apologized and that was the end of it.
 
Not sure it would be considered a sucker punch. Back when I delivered pizzas this guy cut me off, we yelled at each other then he followed me into the parking lot. I got out, not realizing that the two cars behind him were with him. As he and I were squaring off a guy from the other car popped me in the jaw. I've got an iron jaw, so I turned to ask what the fuck he was thinking, when I realized I was about to get beat down by 8 or 9 guys. There was an older guy with them, he stood in the way and yelled for me to get in my car. I did and I left. Traffic wasn't a reason to get beat down.

Another time, at a party I was talking to a girl, whom I had absolutely no interest in, her boyfriend came up and pushed me, then headed outside. I followed.

As he turned around I took a big swing, but I was so drunk I hit the guy beside him. So I guess that guy caught a sucker punch. We then went at it and I beat him up pretty bad. I saw him once or twice after that and he acted a lot different. It was also funny that someone happened to have a video recorder, yes this was before everyone having a phone with video and camera, and they had filmed the fight. We watched it later. The funniest thing was I was lecturing the guy as I punched him. Stuff like, I told you this was going to happen. I warned you to just leave.
 
Fall of 95 i was in Maxx's (in front of Granville near Ken's) and a couple of 30 something redneck dudes came in, one with a duke shirt and one with a duke hat. I made what I thought was an off-hand remark, 'woah, some dukies in the house, take some balls to wear that in here', but did not realize the intent of these fine gentleman was to pick a fight....

Anyway, I sort of do my goofy smile and expect some shit talk, but instead one dude swings on me. Got lucky as I kinda sensed it and pulled back, so all I got was a finger in the eye as he swung through.

Well, the Walmart dukies made a bad choice bc I had several (large) friends there and was very much ingratiated with the bar owners/staff.

My one buddy immediately jumped in and got hit by the other redneck with a beer bottle right between the eyes. Bottle broke, my boy was shocked, but was a fucking brute, and was not bleeding even though he had a bottle broken on his damn face.

So at this point my buddy starts wailing on the guy who hit him, only to have the bouncer (former unc football player who was legit 6'4" 240) intervene and literally softly lift him up by only the weight of his fingertips. At first my boy thought the other guy was in on him, but then said he had never felt a force so powerful so he immediately let up -- and was tossed back 5 ft with flick of the bouncers wrist...

And then our friendly bouncer pounded that Walmart dukie for 10 secs so bad we were all stunned, and mid beating grabbed the other one and tossed him into the pile, beat the shit out of them both. Seriously, if you don't understand how physically dominant some of those athletes are you are fooling yourself-- none of us ever imagined getting into any fracas with div 1 football players after seeing that.

Best part was cops came to arrest the douchies and they were pointing at us saying we are at fault... cops said no, bar staff says all you fucks. We were all 18 or 19 at the time, thank you Maxx's for that black x on the hand (which we were well past having to do) and for having our backs!

(Sorry for extra long story, but damn if it doesn't bring back some very hazy memories! 😎)
