I once had the opportunity to meet Martin Niemoller in a fairly small (about a dozen people) group setting. Someone asked him how the poem/saying that inspired the above actually went because he had heard so many different versions. Pastor Niemoller said he didn't know because he had never said it the same way twice. Which is to say, I think Pastor Niemoller would approve of your variation.First they came for the poor black people
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a poor black person
Then they came for the brown people
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a brown person
Then they came for the transgender
And I did not speak out
Because I was not transgender
Then they came for the Democrats
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Democrat
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
