I was about to say, we've seen that play a few times.
Especially Mormons. I remember my parents volunteering at a local soup kitchen/mission when I was growing up, and the couple running it were super conservative Pentecostals. They had little comic strip books on the tables that were literally about how Mormonism is a cult and they were all going to hell. I had no idea before that how evangelicals viewed LDS. I grew up going to a super bland Presbyterian church and I am very glad for that.
Like the colonial puritans, their idea of "freedom of religion" is "you can have any religion you want, as long as it is the exact same one as ours."
