Fancy by Reba McIntire

I’ve heard her interviewed where she said, in her opinion, it was her best most impactful song. I’m not sure the mother in the song sold her daughter, but certainly prepared for for a life of prostitution

Why the hate?
Well, I have to admit that I may have misunderstood the song. It gave me huge white trash vibes and I hated it party because I thought it was just another song celebrating white trashiness. (I also didn't know it was a cover.)

This thread and watching the video kind of gives me a new perspective on it.

It is still grating partly because I hate Reba's over the top accent thrown in. (Hate when country singers do that.) Now thanks to you I have it stuck in my head. ;-)

Written and originally recorded by Bobbie Gentry a couple of years after her big hit "Ode to Billie Joe"

Yeah, it's definitely important to remember Fancy is a cover. I love Reba. I wish she hadn't covered it. But for a pretty girl growing up in dirt-poor Mississippi in the '40s and '50s, it had a different level of authenticity.
