Look-In: This Tangle in Tallahassee is all-important. Of course every game is now. And it comes as 76-year old Leonard Hamilton sings his swan song as a coach. Gastonia-born Leonard Hamilton has big teams that play rough and tough. This is the third-tallest squad in the country with five players 6-10 or over. FSU starts 6-11 Malique Ewins (14.4 ppg, 8 rpg, 59% league leading shooting percentage) and 6-10 Taylor Bol Bowen (8 ppg, 5.4 rpg) up front with the ACC’s fourth leading scorer, Jamir Watkins (6-7, 18 ppg, 5 rpg), 6-5 Chandler Jackson (7 ppg), and 6-1 Daquan Davis (9 ppg, 2.7 apg) filling the perimeter. Jerry Deng (6-9, 6 ppg, 2 rpg), Alier Maluk (7-0, 2.5 ppg, 2 rpg) play good minutes in the Hamilton style – Waves of BIGs swatting at everything throw up (FSU leads the league with 4.7 blocks per game – Ewin, Bowen, and Maluk head things up there). Watkins is trouble as he attacks the rim relentlessly with size that gets him there.
The Seminole attack will focus on the paint – they are the ACC’s worst from downtown. Defensively, FSU steals the ball to the tune of 8.15 a game, best in the conference. Conversely, they turn it over at 14 per game (Carolina averages 10 per). This is a middle-of-the-pack squad capable of winning, especially with cagey Hamilton at the helm. Thankfully this is not the coach’s final home game nor will there be anything like the Rat-Face Accolades and Memorials and T-Shirts and Massive Media Attention since Leonard Hamilton Day is set for March 8 vs SMU. Thanks for that.
Frontcourt: Lubin is smart and positive. Washington mainly below the fold but does bring good energy to the court. Should they play both Claude and Brown have the rhythms.
Wings: Powell soars brilliantly and Jackson is confident and athletic. Withers is good physically and unambiguous attitudinally. Tyson could contribute.
Guards: Cadeau is Physical and Fired Up. Davis is Newtonian. Trimble has it all.
Outlook: Stopping Watkins from driving and blocking out the Nole Bigs (whose reach far exceeds that of the Heels) are the defensive calls. Focus from Trimble, Powell, Lubin, Washington, and yes, Jackson will be key. They’ve got this. Withers must play big too. May the trending of late carry through. Offensively movement will nullify the height differential so disciplined play calling and execution are musts. There is the home court to consider and though there is no party planned some will want to throw one just the same. The fast starts of late must continue then to nip that, Barney Fife-like in the bud. Fire from the starters sustained by the first in off the bench has to be the reality. Emotion Arcs look bullish in that. Las Vegas says UNC by 2.5. The Ritmos say Carolina by 2. Whew.
