General Lawn thread

Fescue is absolutely fine in NC in the right region. Trying to grow it in the Southern part of the State with sandy soil and its a bad choice. Fescue in the Sandhills is poor because of soil temp and to a lesser degree moisture holding capacity; drive 50 miles to Asheboro and red clay and Fescue becomes a better option.

Who cares if you have green grass in January? Many people do as its better looking and breaks up the winter blues. Odds are its in a state of semi dormancy and your not mowing much anyway

I don't have winter blues
I enjoy it immensely

The amount of water fescue needs in these increasingly hot summers in insane.

So in your case how many seasons (years) did it take for the Zoysia to take over?
Took 4 years in my case for it to completely take over but mine was a big yard. But again, it just depends on how much you plant. Think of it as a checker board. The more you and plant and closer together, the quicker it will be.

I planted it in fescue because as others have mentioned, fescue is really hard to keep up in a non shaded lawn. It takes tons of water if not mostly shaded. I too wanted green grass year round at first but came to hate the fescue because of the amount of watering I had to do and you have to let the fescue stay tall which sucked w dogs and kids playing in it all the time.

I do like how Fescue looks, but most HOA in GA do not allow it.

And, it is a lot of work. You must overseed and aerate pretty much every fall and it takes a lot of water in the hot dry season.

If I had my preference, I would go with nature and accept the mix of clover, grass, and other natural ground cover. Other than certain weeds. :)

I really need to mow my lawn, but it's rained the last few days.

I have managed 35 plus Fescue yards in the Triad region and don't have an issue. I actually water it less than Bermuda so not to promote disease. Sure it thins in Mid July to August but then with a little work its right back by the end of September and its green all year. Fesuce makes a great lawn with proper management and in the right region.

I have Zosia in my front yard and fescue in my back. It’s night and day regarding the maintenance. Besides mowing, Zoysia only requires spraying once a year for weeds. That’s it. The fescue requires watering, spraying, aeration and overseeing every year. I stopped doing that a few years ago and now it’s 80% weeds. My Zoysia looks great. I agree that properly managed fescue looks great, but doing it yourself it’s no contest.

What do you use to spray on your Zoysia for weeds?

I got Celsius WG but you definitely can't overdo the mix or it turns into a death spray for everything

I use a service called Weed Man to put the right chemicals on my fescue lawn six times a year. I thought it was something else when I inititally called but it turned out to be a lawn service.

It took a few years for them to get it healthy but now it's solid green and super thick ten months a year and we'll see what happens this year in July and August. My back yard is heavily shaded so it stays green there all year but the front can have some brown in the extreme heat.
