Going after Greenland

Acquiring Greenland would be amazing for the US. Doing it by force would be an impeachable offense to me but if we could buy it, we absolutely should.

Greenland has the highest alcoholic rate per capita in the world. They have the highest suicide rate per capita in the world.

If Trump had approached them differently and told them about how the deal would make their lives better it might have worked out but he’s an idiot so he ruined any chance of that.
The only bit in your statement has some ring of validity is the bit about trump being and idiot.

I think it’s also about the shipping lanes that will open up in the artic.

The thing is, I am guessing we could have expanded our footprint in Greenland without conflict. If Greenland really needed protection from Russia and China as some claim, that would have been easy to achieve without antagonizing and threatening our allies.

But none of that would have satisfied Trump narcissistic desires.
Those shipping lanes belong to Canada, and they're making plans and spending money to shore up the defense of those shipping lanes. They are the gate keeper. Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland all know this - and guess who the latest additions to NATO are? Yup. A couple of those aforementioned countries. A non-trump-led U.S. could have been a part of that coalition... but oh hell no. The FREE world (not US and Russia) is banding together and moving on with the help or consent of Trumplandia.

You are disputing the alcoholic and suicide rates?
Probably disputing the idea that anything we'd do would change those rates. Sending people there to exploit the natural resources they want will probably put people less used to or suited for those conditions and quite possibly make those numbers worse.

Iow, neither the Greenlanders or me see much in this for them. I know why I don't count. You explain why they don't.

Probably a significant reason for the alcoholism is the absence of anything to do but drink. And the lack of sunlight is not good for depression.

There's no reason to think annexation by the US would address either of those. Trump ain't opening any water parks in Nuuk, and the solar radiation cycle is pretty much inalterable.

Well, ok, I’ve give you those stats. But the Nordic countries and places that far from the equator have always had these issues and it’s well known. There’s absolutely nothing new in that regard. Saying something like that is just a big “duh”, tell us something we didn’t already know.
And in the regard, saying trump is an idiot also falls into that same category, so, let me retract my comment.

But let me take issue with your other bits about how getting Greenland would be great for the US… Hell, overtaking the entire World would also be “great for the US.” It’s still all just a big duh.

The crux is, over-taking Greenland the way trump is going about it is folly and won’t happen without serious push back from Greenland, Denmark, Canada, the EU and NATO.

Oh super, you’re so wrong. Trump will just use his magic marker (you remember; the one that changed the path of the hurricane) and move the sun so they will get more sunlight.

Of course. I forgot about the magic marker. Just thinking about it drives me to tears. And I'm a big strong manly man.

While Trump’s demands elicited international outrage and a rebuke from Denmark, White House officials have in recent weeks taken steps to determine the financial ramifications of Greenland becoming a U.S. territory, including the cost of providing government services for its 58,000 residents, the people said.

At the White House budget office, staff have sought to understand the potential cost to maintain Greenland if it were acquired, two of the people said. They are also attempting to estimate what revenue to the U.S. Treasury could be gained from Greenland’s natural resources. …”
