My moments of excesive speed are primarily at moments when I am three feet away from an 18 wheeler and slowing down seems a bigger risk than just "getting away" I am terrified of riding next to 18 wheelers
That is my "objection" to this bill
But overall it is an interesting experiment. There just too many little jerks going 85 and weaving lane to lane. I am okay with saying we don't have a "right" to go 85 on a public road

This I could about halfway excuse. It's still going to cost someone's life when their speed is limited in an emergency situation. I guess that they risk others randomly is a mitigating factor but I hate leaving this to a machine.
 
I’m surprised it took this long for such a device to be created and mandated. Speed kills. I’m all for it. Now if only they could create a separate device that would not allow your car to run a red light…
 
I drove a Uhaul truck from Gainesville Fla to Raleigh one Memorial day weekend decades ago. It had a "governor" at about 60
That was weird
 
When I was in the Army in Germany, occassionally I would have to drive a small truck (5/4 ton pulling a heavy trailer or a duece and a half) on the autobahn. I was definitely a traffic hazard while doing so. But not because I was speeding.
 
I just wonder if it will be the exact speed limit or like 5-10 over the limit. And I doubt it will work in the most sensitive area - construction zones
 
Hard to see how this particular law could work, but I've thought for a long time it would be reasonable for cars to have a transmitter that allows police to "see" their speed without using a radar gun, etc. That wouldn't keep someone from speeding but it would eliminate a lot of the uncertainty with detection.

I would be fine with this if the speed limits actually made sense.

There's a 4 lane divided read near me with great visibility and very few entry/exit points. The speed limit is 40 (also well known speed trap). I can turn off of that road onto a 2 lane curvy road with very restrictive visibility and a great number of entry/exit points and the speed limit increases to 50.

It makes no sense from a risk stand point.

So, maybe if the speed limits were properly aligned with the risk of the road, then speeding wouldn't be as much of an issue and the GPS controls wouldn't bother anyone.

True an obligation to drive safely.

Many speed limits have nothing to do with safety.

A couple of months ago I was pulled over. I thought I was doing around 50 in a 45 zone in extremely light traffic.

Talked to the officer for 15 minutes. He said I was doing just over 50 is a 35 zone. He even pointed out the start and stop points of the 35 zone. It was about 800 feet. There's no possible way to justify the speed limit dropping for 800 ft when there is no change to the conditions or surroundings of the road.

Since then I've paid attention when I drive that section of road. I've noticed that there is an officer there at least 75% of the time and someone pulled over at least 40% of the time. I believe i understand why the speed limit changes for 800 ft.
 
There's so much nuance to driving.

In my drive to work the guy that was second in line at the stop sign on a feeder road that pulled out 100 ft in front of me without song for the so sign and looking, in a 55 zone, causing me to have to break hard to avoid tarred rear ending him was a much greater risk than the multiple cars doing 80 in the left lane of 400.
 
Seems like a GPS alert would be smarter than a limiter. You'd have access to emergency speed and they'd have GPS access to all the traffic to see if your excessive speed was justified in the attempt to avoid an accident. At least, some discretion would come into play and emergency functions preserved.

I like this idea, but the challenge would be verification of those systems. It probably wouldn’t be hard to hack.
 
When I was in San Francisco recently, I really enjoyed riding around in the Waymos. If we could make every car on the road a Waymo, this world would be a better place.
