Heels vs Horned Frogs

After all of my pessimism (realism?) about our game tonight and UNC football generally, I will say that this post has a strong grain of truth. Turning around UNC football is going to be a long-term job and definitely won't happen overnight or even in one season, because it involves changing the program's whole culture and not just a coach or a coaching staff or a few players here and there. Having said that, whether a legendary NFL coach in his mid-seventies is up to doing that and turning around a college program remains a dubious proposition.
This is how I feel about it. No matter who the new coach was this was always going to be a difficult rebuild. Good chance that we take a few more thorough beatings like the one tonight over the next few seasons too.

I’m hoping tonight’s BEATDOWN fires up Belichick!

My concerns? He’s wealthy. And, he has a limitless supply of Viagra and a 24 year-old girlfriend who thinks trying to trademark “gold digger” is a good idea.

This presser is vintage Belichick. Refusing to actually answer the questions. Giving the same canned answer over and over. So embarrassing.

Well, I barely pay attention to or care about college basketball anyway, but UNC isn't paying Hubert Davis $50 million to serve up garbage like this....
They are putting more money into basketball than they are into football, relatively speaking.

I guess I just don’t understand the blow it all up after one game. Especially when you knew they are going to be significantly in talent this season.

No one could have expected anything different. This is what we got when we hired Belichick. A high-risk, maybe high reward (I’ve always been skeptical) proposition guaranteed to be a huge embarrassment if it went badly.

I hear ya, and that's a fair question/observation. I'm definitely not advocating for us to blow it all up after one game- we've got to see this thing through one way or the other. But I think it's entirely fair to ridicule the product we saw tonight. We are paying this man $50 million, paying his sons and buddies millions more, we've poured yet tens of millions more of investment into the program. What we got tonight was something that John Bunting, Larry Fedora, or Mack Brown 2.0 could serve up for pennies on the comparative dollar. UNC is so desperate for media affirmation and relevance, and we court it at every opportunity, so we've got to accept that the stakes are a hell of a lot higher now when you put this level of hype and investment into the program. We failed tonight, in the most deeply humiliating way, on the biggest stage that the program has arguably ever been on.

I wish from the beginning they actually tried to find a good young coach. Someone like the coach at Liberty or James Madison. Instead they went with a splashy hire that will only be around 4 years maybe.
Matt Campbell and Jon Sumrall both expressed interest in interviewing for the job directly to Bubba until they realized that the BOT was running their own concurrent search that focused exclusively on Belichick.

Didn't see the presser, based on your description it doesn't sound all that different from Mack, except that Mack was no doubt smoother and more folksy while he spouted lots of empty rhetoric about looking at the tape and going back to the basics, blah blah blah. Sounds like Belichick is about the same but just with fewer words and charm.

For anyone that has been skeptical of the Belichick hire, it’s pretty easy to say it’s now guaranteed to fail after what happened tonight.

I’m not quite there yet but it’s hard to make any sort of case that it’s going to get better lol. Maybe not quite as pitiful as letting JMU hang 77 on us last season, but it somehow feels even worse given the circumstances. Really couldn’t script a more painful way to open the season. So on brand for UNC football that I’m not even surprised.

Last thing I'll say before I shut up and head to bed. I know it probably seems like I'm relishing this. I promise I'm not. I'm just mad that Carolina Football continues to be such an abject humiliation over and over and over, and this is how I express that anger- through mockery, ridicule, and sharing internet memes. I truly want UNC football to be good. I truly do. I have just truly given up on it ever actually happening, and that's what makes me mad. It's the hope that kills you. Trust me, nothing would make me happier than if I get to eat major helpings of crow if Bill and Co. turn this around. But it's looking like Carolina Football is the same as it ever was. It's so deflating.

Reality: jimmy joes > coaching, we're relying on cheap transfers who didn't even get here til summer and an otherwise depleted roster.

We're playing a true frosh at LT and true frosh walkon on the interior DL (Xavier Lewis).

We started two interior DL in just their second yr of college ball - Leroy and D'Antre.

Simpson and Dixon immediately showed they're good players on D, nobody else really jumped out (though many are young).

Did anybody stand out on O, hard to tell w such awful play calling, maybe Max Johnson and Shipp?

Coaches rotated a ton at OL, DL, safety, they're trying to figure out what they've got.

I dont ever remember seeing the absolute anger and vitriol from people in the stadium I saw tonight. Whether the powers that be realize it or not, they lost MINIMUM 10,000 season tickets purchasers tonight and maybe more. You cant jack up prices the way we did and field that monstrosity.
