Heels vs Horned Frogs

You'd think that the greatest NFL coach that ever coached in the history of NFL coaches would have done a little bit better than simply hiring one of his buddies as OC.
IMO, I think part of the problem with hiring a legendary aging (old) coach is that they too often see the UNC coaching gig as an easy job they can coast through and enjoy until they finally retire for good. That is certainly how Mack Brown seemed to see his job here, except for maybe his first season. I think last year he even said that we ought to be happy with 7 or 8 win seasons because that's really good here. One of my concerns with hiring Belichick is that he would be the same - he'd just see this as not a chance to build a program to something better than it had been, but an easy gig where he could get some wins and stay in the spotlight a little longer and cash a very nice paycheck on his way to true retirement. We'll see what happens, but this game so far isn't making me feel any better.

The problem for UNC football is that when we have hired younger coaches we haven't done much better, as with Fedora. Just very frustrating all around.

Go Heels! It’s what we do from here but I don’t think I saw anything that would give me confidence in a comeback.

I don't think the issue is that Belichick came here to take it easy and slack off, that's just not the type of person he is. And all the reporting around the team is that he's very engaged.

We certainly seem to have problems, but I don't think that's one of them.

Facing one of the best returning QBs in the country was an unfortunate development for this defense in the season opener. He and #7 are killing us.
One reason for getting a big-name coach like Belichick is that will bring lots of national publicity to the program and will keep us in the spotlight. The problem is that along with that publicity goes a lot of pressure to play big-name quality opponents for television ratings, and if we're not ready for those games we're going to get clobbered over and over again. Which totally negates the publicity advantages we get from hiring somebody like Belichick to begin with.

Maybe, I still have my doubts, reporters or no.

Hopefully it would bring top players, too.

Jeff Goodman is a mush-mouthed moron but if we don't look a lot better and do so quickly, the national sports media is going to have a field day. You know they're itching for it.

And they will have a right to. We sold our soul and the entire future of the other 27 sports on this experiment. If this fails, we have killed any chance at financial success for the entire athletic department.

TCU took what we gave them in the passing game — I think we are working so hard to prevent the HUGE play that they can just pitch and catch with virtually no pressure for the 5-15 yard passing plays.

I would not be surprised to see TCU throw a haymaker early in their opening drive — try to demoralize the team and drive the fans out of the stands (though they may be surprised that our fans probably won’t be back in the stands yet for their opening drive if past is prologue).

It was always going to happen. They have a story either way but most of them will get more run out of the negative storyline. It is just the way of things, especially with a guy like Belichick who has not exactly been chummy with the media.

And that strategy may work because I expect we will scheme a tighter coverage in the second half, which will expose us over the top.

Is this a sign that this year will be more of the same? Or is TCU actually a really good team?
TCU had a lot of returning starters from a nine-win season and a passing offense that has been hard for anybody to stop.

So this is probably a particularly tough opening matchup for us.

But TCU isn’t ranked for a reason — their 2024 defense was not very good, so they had to outscore everyone and they didn’t have a running game that could salt away a lead. They are probably about the same this year.

But they had a HUGE head start in terms of experienced talent who played together last season, including at critical skill positions.
