IMO, I think part of the problem with hiring a legendary aging (old) coach is that they too often see the UNC coaching gig as an easy job they can coast through and enjoy until they finally retire for good. That is certainly how Mack Brown seemed to see his job here, except for maybe his first season. I think last year he even said that we ought to be happy with 7 or 8 win seasons because that's really good here. One of my concerns with hiring Belichick is that he would be the same - he'd just see this as not a chance to build a program to something better than it had been, but an easy gig where he could get some wins and stay in the spotlight a little longer and cash a very nice paycheck on his way to true retirement. We'll see what happens, but this game so far isn't making me feel any better. You'd think that the greatest NFL coach that ever coached in the history of NFL coaches would have done a little bit better than simply hiring one of his buddies as OC.
The problem for UNC football is that when we have hired younger coaches we haven't done much better, as with Fedora. Just very frustrating all around.
