MSNBC reporter on the ground in Asheville says the River Arts District is just gone.
It’s all so sad, with all the areas that have been absolutely destroyed. But having spent so much time in the River Arts District and having art on our walls that we bought from an artist whose studio is/was there— including a piece that is the focal point of our main room— this really hits me hard.

I've said "i'd kill to live up in the NC mtns by these windy little creeks and rivers". Places between Hendo and Dupont forest, or anywhere around Pisgah, Nantahala, Wilson's creek, Panthertown, etc. Despite the risks, I could be talked into buying and building/rebuilding something. You can look beyond the muddy roads and detritus in the current pics and it's still an amazing place. It wouldn't be fancy given the lack of flood insurance, but i'd still do it. Humans are short-sighted.

Yeah, these are the times that remind you there’s no place that’s perfect. Because otherwise, that stretch along Wilson’s Creek would be pretty damn close.

Just watched Coops presser . Holy Mackeral that is a massive effort-unreal. Search and Resue of course , scouring all those little towns and Hollers

We need a written, bullet point summary of that press conference. People need to distribute this far and wide on social medial to counter the disinformation campaign...

i absolutely love that area. so quiet and remote. my dad first started taking me camping at mortimer when i was a toddler. i love all of those trails....harper creek, lost cove, gragg prong, huntfish, etc. etc. gragg prong has one of the coolest swimming holes on earth.

like you said, it takes a hell of a long time to get in or out of there on a beautiful day. i'm sure those gravel roads are gone. heartbreaking stuff.
We were supposed to do our annual camping trip and hike this weekend. Now I'm like, will it even be accessible next year?

yeah, last june when i was out there part of the roseboro road entrance/exit toward linville was out due to some sort of storm damage so really the only way in or out was brown mountain beach road.

really, really hard area to get in and out of even when conditions are good.

Gonna be sending you messages for more trail ideas in that area.

Kind of amazing progress in this wash-out on HWY 105 just west of Boone:

Looks like they filled the hole with dirt and packed it in? Probably won't survive too many rainstorms but certainly better than nothing for helping to get supplies into those communities.

Just as an FYI -- if any of you are donating supplies to local organizations to take up to the mountains, please include some Benadryl. Local EMS is running out and people are encountering a lot of allergens (yellowjackets, plants, etc) during the rescue and cleanup operations.

Man, I’m getting major nostalgia reading these posts about Wilson Creek. That was a go-to area for backpacking trips for my Boy Scout troop back in the day. Done the drive up brown mountain beach road on to either Linville or Blowing Rock via Globe Rd several times over the years and it’s one of my favorite areas in the world. Makes my stomach turn thinking about what probably happened to all of those hiking areas and especially the little villages (Mortimer, Globe) along that stretch.

Even more sobering when you realize that’s a relatively small area in the grand scheme of WNC, and there are countless other valleys/hollers that are affected.

How did all the damn yellowjackets survive the flooding???

The Wilson Creek area is likely unimaginable. It's hard to reach that stretch on sunny days - gravel roads, some single lane, etc. I hike up in the Lost Cove/Harper Creek area and when you stumble across that little Holler along Gragg Prong, I am thinking "yeah that's just gone...." - I mean, they are 6+ miles on single lane gravel roads from the nearest paved road. Getting out in that storm, once it started, was likely impossible.

Wilson Creek itself? Eeeesh. Those little homes and shacks are likely obliterated
Are there really people who live along Gragg Prong? That’s about as remote as it gets.

IMG_2403.jpegI’m a retired teacher and coach and work PT for our local Rec dept. I’m still without power at my house (as of Tuesday 3pm).
I took a load of clothes to the Rec to wash this a.m. (the Rec in town has power and water). While there, 4 loads of dirty clothes were dropped off with a note: “Please wash, dry and fold. These belong to linemen working to restore power in WNC.” I was honored to stay and help wash the clothes. These “linemen” came to us from Greenville, NC. These clothes belong to a young lineman named Oscar M.
Much love to you Oscar, and thanks for all you are doing for the citizens of WNC.

Heard on the local radio today that linemen from Nova Scotia were sent down to NC/ GA and stationed there ahead of the storm.
