Is he a PG or a 2 guard who can play PG? From the article: “Playing alongside First Team All-Conference playmaker Nique Clifford, Evans totaled five or more assists six times on the season.” Asking b/c I honestly don’t know.

Evans ranked No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference play in true shooting percentage (70.3%), No. 1 in free throw percentage (88.9%), No. 2 in three-point percentage (45.2%), No. 2 in effective field goal percentage (66.2%) and No. 5 in two-point percentage (63.5%).

In two NCAA Tournament games (against Memphis and Maryland), he shot a combined 8-for-13 on three-pointers, averaging 16.5 points.

Transfer portal reel:

He doe not appear to be a super ball-handler, is turnover prone and statistically not great at creating his own shot, but very effective spot up shooter with deep range. He has a weird form on his shot where he lands right foot forward, right hip forward. No indication of defense. At 6-2 not tiny but not exactly super tall either.

I don't like it if HD is expecting him to come in and play massive minutes, but I do as a back-up role player.

WE GOT A MOTHERFUCKING POINT GUARD!!!

3.1 apg versus 1.9 TOV/game.

He’s a slightly short (6’2”) combo guard. Combo guards are short SG’s people hope become PG’s. They rarely do.

He “only” averaged 10.6 ppg. He shot well; but, he wasn’t a high volume shooter. He did shoot 85% from the line; so, the odds are his mechanics are good.

I doubt he answers the need at PG.

His defensive rating was 104.1, but CSU's defensive rating was pretty good at 100.5. So doesn't appear to be a plus defender. 0.8 steals is quite low for a combo guard playing 28.1 mpg.

Pretty clear that he is coming here to be the lead guard, with some backup by Trimble. Don’t think we are taking any other ones this year.

That’s likely the case.

I wonder if he’s actually a PG?

The best thing I’ve read about him is his coach at Colorado State (now at Minnesota, IIRC) says he’s a gym rat who works his ass off.

I don’t think Colorado State had a major post presence; so, his “easy” assists likely didn’t exist.

In 5 games against Power 5 conference teams (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12), he shot just .395 from the field, .250 from 3, and averaged just 2.4 assists.

Those games mostly came early in the season, and he did get better as this past season went on...but the competition also was generally less stiff.

Never take 5 games as indicative of anything.

My concern is he appears to be a short SG and not a PG.

I know, but I was just providing a little additional context, and I didn't just pick 5 random games. If we're taking someone at any position from a non-P5 conference, it's not meaningless to look at how they perform against better competition, since he'll see an increase in competition by playing for us.

The 2.4 assists don't seem to suggest that he's a PG, but maybe he can grow into that role for us. Glad he has a good work ethic.
