Their strategy is go all in on top 10 HS players and use the portal to fill needs with portal experience.
Sure, but when you basically have your pick of players it would seem safer to bring in a top 10 HSer or two and fill the rest with proven veterans.

VAL to the transfer portal. what a time. i'm sure someone tempted him with more money and PT.

hard to blame the staff too much for this one, kid agreed to terms and is now backing out at the last minute.

Dang, that sucks that VAL has entered the portal. But he’s apparently saying this is due to potential complexities of the House settlement and he fully intends to return.

VAL is now on his fourth school in four years.

He was a decent rotation/depth piece up front but I'm not too bummed by his departure. He would help the team, but not enough to fret about in my view.

It’s hard to blame the staff for any of it. Players go where they can make the most money.

The junior forward made that announcement on Monday, one day before the offseason portal closes, releasing the following statement on social media: "Before anybody jumps to the wrong conclusion, I am letting everyone know that I am entering the transfer portal with full intent on returning to UNC. My action relates to the complexities surrounding the possible approval of the pending NCAA settlement."

I'm feeling my college sports fandom slipping away every year, the portal and NIL are just speeding up the process.

Right?

My son is 2. More than anything I want to teach him about the Carolina Way and share that love with him, but I'm just growingly afraid that it'll all be gone by the time he's old enough to care.

I mean, I guess? I don't know what complexities he's talking about? Calheel?

VAL strikes me as a pretty smart dude.

So it sounds like Lubin wants to come back to UNC and is just negotiating to make sure his NIL deals hold up with the impeding house stuff. Of all the ups and downs of this off-season this particular situation does feel more on the inconsequential side. No disrespect to him as a player but the fact that he was playing serious minutes for last season’s team was one of the reasons that we weren’t very good. He’d be nice as the 4th or 5th big man in next season’s rotation, but if he leaves I frankly don’t think it would make much of a difference.

Big picture though I agree that this stuff is getting way out of hand. Obviously more guardrails are needed.

I think Snoop is correct.

Unless you’re Tanner or VAL’s agent, hard to know exactly what is going on. But it certainly gives VAL more negotiating leverage to be in the portal.
