I look at it this way: the reporting for weeks indicated that Illinois had the inside track on Stojakovic. It’s a reasonable assumption then that UNC must have made a strong financial offer to even be in consideration that late in the process. It’s very possible that the money was roughly equal but the guy just liked the fit/situation at Illinois more for whatever reason. It’s not always a black and white process where programs are bidding on players auction style and the highest offer automatically wins.

Apparently the current UNC roster cost 11.3 million (in UNC dollars).

I saw that number floated too by that Tarheel Illustrated account. That may well be true but honestly I don’t put much stock into those guys.

Taking a step back and removing Stojakovic from the equation (doesn’t sound like we were ever a serious contender there anyway), the IC staff has been pretty consistent that the financial situation behind the scenes is much improved to the point that it can’t be used as an excuse for poor roster construction anymore. That seems to be backed up based on Matt Norlander’s reporting about a week ago saying that were one of a handful of teams in the country prepared to spend $10 million on its roster this off-season.

If it turns out that we do have another flawed roster that struggles to another pedestrian season, I think that would be because we didn’t allocate the budget correctly, not that the budget itself was too small.

If we have another pedestrian season then we are also very likely going to need even more money, this time to hire a new coach. I don't think Davis will survive another subpar season, nor should he.

I don’t think UNC will come out and give the exact amount. I would not be surprised if THI’s number is accurate, especially given what Norlander has written, along with what IC has said about money not being an issue this offseason.

But, as I said, feel free to believe what you choose to believe and ignore what you choose to ignore.

You aren't ever going to get evidence in NIL/portal recruiting. Or if you do, it is very likely intentional smoke and not trustworthy anyway. If you are going to require courtroom level proof to know what is happening in portal season, then you might as well not check this thread.

I spend little-to-no time looking at who will play for the Heels in football or hoops in upcoming seasons….if they’re wearing Carolina Blue, I’ll cheer for them.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about portal rumors. I never bought premium on IC because it didn’t tell me shit that couldn’t be learned in a few minutes or hours.

I hope we’ll have a decent team…..a bunch of guys I want to cheer for….,the Women’s Lacrosse Team this last weekend? DAMN!

This is pretty much my approach. I have never followed recruiting. Following the whims of teenagers has never interested me. The put a team on the field or the floor wearing Carolina blue and I pull for them. I have always trusted the organizations to recruit the best possible athletes to wear Carolina blue, and other than in football it has pretty much worked out.

But that type of fandom is harder when the teams don’t win. We are used to mediocrity in football, but we are used to our basketball team contending nationally on a regular basis. It seems to me that our options are to adjust our expectations in basketball to accept mediocrity as we have in football, or to find the right folks to run the basketball program to achieve the level of winning we are accustomed to.
