So the whole team made about as much as Cooper Flagg last year. I thought we were assured that the team was financially competitive. That seems impossible at $5M, unless RJ was playing for free.

Puts all of last year in a different light.

UNC definitely did not have the same overall talent as Duke last year, for sure. Last year's team had enough talent to be top 25 all year, and should have been.

How much did Duke pay Flagg?

Yea, that's crazy. Hard to see how last years team maxed out at 5 mil.

Even if UNC will be mediocre next year as you call it, why not wait and see?

You (and everyone else) have no idea how good the team will end up being

They added 1 of the best big men in the portal and 1 of the best Euro players

Every fanbase would be thrilled with those additions

He wants it and he wants it now and ,by God, he deserves it. Didn't you know?

Even if , by real fans' standards, still a bit diminished, I'd think we'd be more patient when we see the differences in the money previously available and the substantial revampment of how we have to build a team. It would also spread the credit and blame between the coaches and the general manager and his staff.

I don't see how this moves any blame away from HD and his staff, and puts it on the GM. He's not working with, nor coaching, the players.

If anything, the hype surrounding this current roster, along with it costing upwards of 14 million dollars, puts more pressure (and hence blame if they don't succeed) on HD and his staff.

That depends one hell of a lot on Hubert's input into what players he has to work with. That's not all on him and the staff anymore. If a team put together like this, and I don't mean just a UNC team, and the locker room implodes either because of NIL agreements or player conflicts, is that the coach and staff? If the team is a big success, is that all on the coach and staff? If the responsibility and credit is shared, which it seems to be and should be, then the blame should be as well. Tanstaafl at work, you know.

These players were not forced on HD. They're here first and foremost because HD wants them here. Those that left are no longer here because HD didn't want them enough to be here - whether it be not willing to pay enough to keep them, or through losing their trust in him as a coach, etc. (ignoring going pro and having no eligibility left). Yes, if they don't win it's going to be put at the feet of HD, while if they do HD will get the credit - whether right or wrong. (I think a better measure of if HD and his staff have improved is do the players/team "improve.") Some credit might be given to Tanner for helping to identify and bring in certain players, but almost all credit and blame will be placed on HD, like every other head coach.

I disagree but that's a conversation that has taken place many, many times and I'm not interested in rehashing.

If the team was really assembled for $5M, then it wasn't remotely a level playing field and that helps explain why we couldn't fill our roster holes. Which explains why we finished out of the top 25.

"Not willing" is a bizarre term to use for an endeavor with a capped budget.

If we have $5M to work with, and the going rate for a good center is $2M, then it doesn't matter how much HD wants them here. We're going to get what we pay for, which is Lubin and not the guy from Stanford.

Also, it seems weird that you discount the concept of secondary options. Nobody was "forced" on HD perhaps, but if he's going with his sixth choice, it's seems weird to say he wants them here.

Which is why I said that a better evaluation of the job HD/staff have done would be to analyze the improvement of the players and team.
