How will a Trump presidency affect you?

It could impact my family in several ways.

From what I've read Ga is one of many states that already has a law banning same sex marriages waiting to go, if the SCOTUS can overturn Obergefell.

I work in a job that is directly created by the requirement to meet federal regulations, so that could be indirectly impacted by changes at the FDA.

Him fucking up the economy could delay my retirement.

The possibility of him making the housing market worse could impact the value of my home, which could impact my retirement.

My job is 90% driven by federal regulations. They haven’t been the target of any of this insanity yet (and in fact federal funding supporting the state agencies responsible for part of the regulatory oversight actually sharply increased during the first Trump administration). But adjacent regs are definitely on their radar. I could see my industry being gutted during the next four years and beyond.

I'm getting more worried about my wife's federally funded research job, although it's likely she could revert back to her lower paying privately funded research job. That's assuming all the private funding doesn't switch priorities when the government stops funding cancer research and the like. The fact that they are activitely devising strategies to avoid losing funding really hit me and made me sympathize with what all the USAID and federal workers are going through. All these mostly middle and upper middle class people suddenly either having no income or scared to death about losing it is heartbreaking.

I still think he will prop up markets by whatever means necessary and that deregulation will increase corporate profits. I'm not saying that's always a good thing but it usually is in terms of your retirement account. The Federal Reserve is also appointed by the President and most of them are not spring chickens, so I think he'll start getting more influence in there at some point to manipulate markets. I mean, he can fuck up anything, but since it seems to be something he cares about I do not expect big losses even if we don't get the returns of the last few years any more.

I am not rich by any means but I have been pretty much coasting on easy street without any real worries, thinking my retirement game plan was gonna work out and all, and the last month has been pretty humbling. Realizing my own situation is not as secure as I thought it was, seeing friends actually lose jobs, and thinking about how long that nest egg might last and then how much longer I'd have to work (maybe forever) if things really go to hell has been a buzz kill for sure.

I'm very thankful to have no short term concerns because I know a lot of people do, but feeling threatened about what you have accumulated is always gonna sting.

I figure now’s a good time to bump this thread.

I work for a big nonprofit research organization based in the triangle, but with several offices abroad. We have contracts with CDC, NIH, USAID, and dozens of other governmental organizations/offices.

As you’d imagine, we’re shitting bricks. Projects are on hold or have been discontinued. Layoffs are imminent. I *think* I’m in a good position to not be among the first round—I’m mid-career, have been with the org for a decade, have carved out my own niche. I don’t work directly on USAID projects, though my work on some CDC, HHS, and NIH projects has slowed to a crawl.

I was just informed that some MAGA idiots doxxed a few of my colleagues on X/Twitter. They took screenshots from our website describing some projects having to do with racial justice and lgbtq issues. Posted names and photos of my colleagues with threatening/insulting messages.

Good times.
Unfortunately, you are fucked.

Man it is crazy how many of these human aid and public service organizations/projects are just taking down their websites altogether or drastically altering them to avoid being targeted for helping minorities. Like you pratically couldn't get a grant two years ago without demonstrating how you weren't just helping white people, and now if it's on your public facing materials you risk losing it. Insane. A niche consulting industry has developed advising charities on how to avoid losing funding. WTF.

Yep—my org scrubbed our website of anything even remotely “DEI” related or that mentions lgbtq people. Disabled a ton of links, took down all staff profiles, etc.

Not sure, being a cabinet member and having to constantly lick trumps ass might be a fate worse than death.
OG would happily lick Trump’s ass…..so long as doing so made OG think he’s an “independent thinker.”

About time to bump this thread again. How’s everyone doing?

Just saw a CNN clip about the local (Durham, specifically) impact of shuttering USAID and the losses of other federal contracts. Can’t find it on the CNN website—perhaps someone can track it down and provide a better link.

The org I work for just had a second round of layoffs yesterday. So far around 500 staff have been let go, with further cuts expected in the coming weeks. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll have a job.

Dozens of my friends and colleagues outside of my org have been let go. Most work on USAID-funded projects, though some (like me) work through contracts with a host of other government agencies (HHS, EPA, etc).

This stuff is already hitting the Triangle hard…and it’s only gonna get worse.

What say ye, board MAGA folks? Totally cool with destroying the local economy to own the libs?

Sorry to hear that. I fear that most of your colleagues are in the FO stage having skipped the FA stage, which is patently unjust. This is our system. Hopefully the debacle of an administration will spur reforms -- significant ones.

the problem for them is that everyone is getting owned to some degree by a bunch of this stuff, not just the libs.

see the townhalls and all of the social media videos of trump voters begging for their jobs/government assistance/opportunities back.
