Disagree

Vance is so horribly unlikeable that he would lose a ton of the swing support that voted for Trump. No charisma, no ability to connect.

They would go back to being the party of guys in suits who give all the money to Wall Street but without the cult leader who has them all convinced he’s fighting for you.

You're talking four years from now. I'm talking about the next four years. I'm not sure we have an election in four years.

I do. I would be way more afraid if Trump were like in his early 60s. The challenge with autocracies is when the leader dies. Unless the structure of oppression is firmly in place, it can be hard to sustain when the head is removed. He's not going to even be coherent in 4 years

Now, I am more nervous that post-election, when the new democrat party wins, will the GOP honor it even though it's not Trump on the ballot?

I am going to say it again because I think we all need to be warned.

Trump doesn’t really care about most policy positions except for those related to immigration and crime.

But Trump does care a lot about having an obedient population that is subservient to him. That is not something to dismiss.

It would not surprise me one bit if Trump tried to have the military take a loyalty pledge to him personally like Hitler did. I guarantee you if he did there would be Republican leaders who would argue that he is the commander in chief and so why wouldn’t they be loyal to him. We are already seeing that rhetoric with regards to high level executive branch positions.
The military doesn't really work that way. So he asks for loyalty from the JCS and then what? He asks them to deploy domestically to tamp down on US citizens?

You really think he pulls that off?

Oh, I think he could EASILY pull it off. Apparently you haven't looked at the makeup of a lot of enlisted folks these days.

On a personal level, here are a few things I expect to impact me (I’ll add more to this list as I think it over):

1. No further hope of student loan forgiveness. Potentially an end to the PSLF program I’ve been enrolled in for 7 years. Dashing any notions of buying a home.

2. My job will be in danger. I work for a nonprofit research org—the bulk of my work is funded through federal grants from CDC, CMS, etc. The funding always dips during R administrations, but there’s a high likelihood that much of it will dry up entirely with Trump, Musk, and RFK Jr at the helm.

3. My girlfriend’s career (and mental health) will be greatly impacted. As noted in another thread, she’s an immigration attorney who’s worked in nonprofits for a couple decades, helping underprivileged and abused women and children. So…yeah.

How about you?
My job exist because of government regulations. :(

I just hope that the economy doesn't tank, I'm too close to retirement to recover.

Autocracy in America - The Atlantic

This is discussed in this series podcast. They discuss how a few well placed loyalist can control the military.

The Chinese Communist Party is only about 7.1% of the population.

I do not see him as a threat to democracy and I don't think he's as right wing as he pretends to be right now.
Well, except for the people propping him up, ie Heritage, Thiel, and Musk, do not believe in democracy and recognize ttump for the empty shell he is.

Trump wants absolute power and Putin like wealth and he will be able to achieve both now with a cabinet who takes a loyalty test to Trump himself and a court that has given him almost unlimited power.
This. I’m shocked at how much sanguine is spilling. Ttump is going to completely rewrite the powers of the presidency. The USSC has given him license. The man is going to defenestrate journalists, and the like. He’s already sought the power to loose national guard bullets on protestors, and now … (see USSC). Trump doesn’t joke - he reveals. The most impulsive, revanchist, and incompetent man in the history of American politics was just granted the imperial presidency - it’s going to get violent, in the best case scenario.

But Trump does care a lot about having an obedient population that is subservient to him. That is not something to dismiss.
Yep. Trump looks at the domination held by Putin and thinks “fucking cool”. Ttump looks at the domination held by Kim Jong Un and thinks “WAY FUCKING COOL”.
He asks them to deploy domestically to tamp down on US citizens?

Trump will immediately sack anyone who pushes back. There are no guardrails, and seemingly no impediments. Our institutions and their “rules” are symbolic. Ttump will appoint a Mike Flynn (no small chance it’s actually Mike Flynn) to the chair of the JSoC.

There won’t be a single person in any chain of command that isn’t a personified ttump rubber stamp.

Top generals could certainly be on the chopping block. Bulwark had an interesting article on this. Good news was that States control their natty guards, and even many Red states aren't going to follow hitler.

Democracy Will Suffer a Relatively Quiet Death. We Simulated It.
It isn't a long read, but here's a snippet:
Imagine, for instance, something like this in spring 2025:

On the surface, America seems stable. For nearly all Americans, life continues as usual. But at the Pentagon, top generals are being forced out for objecting to Trump’s cozy relationship with Russia and his plans to use active-duty troops to round up migrants. At the CIA, the Justice Department, and other agencies, civil servants are being reassigned or fired for raising concerns about the politicization of intelligence and the pressure to launch ideologically motivated investigations.

High-profile nonprofit groups are undergoing IRS audits, forcing their senior staff to spend most of their time huddled with accountants and lawyers. More university presidents have resigned in the face of investigations, audits, and threats to yank federal funding over curricula and the actions of student protests. Meanwhile, a number of high-profile journalists are the targets of leak investigations. The owners of several major media outlets are under investigation for specious criminal tax code violations, and the FCC is considering revoking the broadcast licenses of a dozen television stations. Liz Cheney, Adam Schiff, and retired Gen. Mark Milley are under investigation for allegedly mishandling classified materials.

The nation’s streets are largely peaceful. But around the country, numerous civil servants, reporters, teachers, librarians, election officials, and other community leaders are being doxxed and threatened.

You can imagine how this unfolds. Most people will see the writing on the wall: Speak out, and life becomes unpleasant

I'm just trying to figure out what I'm going to do with all of this extra money that I'm going to have after Trump makes gas and everything else dirt cheap. The money that I'll save once he replaces Obamacare with MAGAcare should be enough to get that second vacation home in Montauk. I mean I do realize that he never revealed his healthcare plan the last time around, but that wasn't his fault. It was the fault of George Soros, Nancy Pelosi, Shifty Schiff and the Deep State. I heard his concept of a plan for healthcare is going to be the best healthcare plan ever imagined. Real estate is going to be so cheap after His Excellency enacts MAGALebensraum. Don't get me wrong. I don't hate Mexicans and South Americans. I just need them to leave so us REAL AMERICANS can have a little more living space.

My wife and I are still working out the logistics of where we will place our mandated framed picture of Respected Comrade General Secretary Trump. I suggested we move the pictures of our kids in the living room and relocate them to another room to make space for it. We also can't decide if we want to use a framed photo or if we want to commission a custom painting not unlike the one with General Tony Soprano and his valiant steed Pie O My. I'm so tired of winning already.

And it says "Our exercises suggested that the greatest imminent threat to democracy isn’t civil war or mass detentions but age-old human weaknesses: lack of courage and imagination; difficulty overcoming collective-action problems; our desire to hope for the best instead of planning for the worst."

^ Americans are "fat and happy" enough to lack courage... Do I protest like Alexei Navalny or do I just accept some things i don't like and instead go to applebees followed by watching some hoops.

I didn’t say he would be successful nor that that would mean any specific policy changes within the military. I just said I would not be surprised if he asked for the pledge or that some in his orbit would immediately defend such a request.

Y’all are thinking Trump will be running this.

In 2016-17, “conservatives” and Republicans thought Trump was a competent businessman who would help reset and restructure government. They soon realized how ignorant and incompetent he is.

That’s part of the reason behind Project 2025. Right-wing Republicans are not letting this opportunity evaporate. They’ve mapped out the transition and they’ll run it……whether Trump is on board (he will be) or not.
WASHINGTON – House Speaker Mike Johnson told a crowd of supporters Monday night that there will be "no Obamacare" if former President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans win the upcoming election on Nov. 5.

Republicans will propose “massive reform” to the Affordable Care Act if they win control of both chambers in Congress and the presidency, Johnson, R-La., said at a campaign event for Republican House candidate Ryan Mackenzie in Pennsylvania on Monday evening.

“Health-care reform’s going to be a big part of the agenda,” Johnson said about Republicans' plans. He added that the GOP wants to take a “blowtorch to the regulatory state,” with healthcare among the key sectors they plan to focus on.

An attendee then asked Johnson: “No Obamacare?” referring to the ACA. He laughed, rolled his eyes and replied, “No Obamacare.”

“The ACA is so deeply ingrained, we need massive reform to make this work, and we got a lot of ideas on how to do that,” Johnson said, according to a video of the exchange first published by NBC News.

no dude. you are making that connection; not my intention. You know I work in transportation planning? Mostly around Safestreets. I wish we did that kind of spending. What I am saying is that by and large, the Germans, Dutch, French, Italians I worked with did not want to fight anywhere, including Europe.
I imagine the reason they don't want to fight anymore is because they have spent most of the last century trying to recover from the devastation and destruction of the two "great wars". We as a country are very naive and soft when it comes to understanding the threat of war ON OUR OWN TURF.

My wife asked me if we would be better off if Trump just died. I said hell no. We don’t want Vance & Thiel at the helm.
I hate to break it to you, but I predict that Vance will be POTUS within 18 months. Trump doesn't want anything but to squirm out of his legal troubles and then play golf. He will accomplish the first objective just by winning his second term. The real plan of the Christofascists is to have Vance installed as supreme leader ASAP. Trump is just excess baggage at this point.

I'm an educator in North Carolina so I am relieved to see that Josh Stein has prevailed. For my students that want to become teachers I am also very glad to see that Mo Green did as well.

I live in both #WNC and NYC though and I suspect that I'll spend more time up north moving forward but the end plan is the same as always...move to another country. I have long had that place picked out and have spent a good deal of my life there already and have many friends and connections there. My wife is down with that as well.

For a while I've been trying to talk my daughter into going to school in Spain (she's already done a summer program there in a place that we all enjoy -- Sitges). I'd like her to branch out. It wouldn't bother me if she left the US behind.

The world is a pretty despicable place at present. Over 2 million North Carolinians voted for Mark Robinson.

But I have to add that at my polling place in NYC the call was 92% Harris, 8% trump.
