It's fine to rail on about it but the bottom line is and always will be the W or L.

I think it hurts worse as a fan to lose a game you lead big. It's easy to point out the plays and decisions that contributed to it. Feels more preventable. But, losing that way and losing by 8 in a game you never in the 2nd half lead are not really any different.

Games are won and lost in a lot of different ways. Hubert just isn't winning enough of them.

Really for 5 years. How many times have we seen games where from the start they came out flat and you knew they were going to lose, too? And then games just like this when they start losing a big lead and you think here we go again. Too much of both with Hubert.
 
I just watxhed the entire post game press conference. Hubert looked stunned, disappointed, and LOST. First several questions went to players, Trimble and Veesaar. Both said not tired late (of course they will not say they were gassed.) Veesaar actually made some insightful points about the collapse that Hubert couldn't even see. He said VCU was packing their defense in the paint and we got too impatient and just settled for 3's and couldn't hit. He also said VCU out physicalled them and fought harder.

Then it was "Coach's" turn. As already posted above, here are the first few questions and Hubert's responses:
1) Hubert, do you think your team got tired, just a bit there, at the end?
"I did not, I didn't"
2) Hubert, why did you go to just a 6 man rotation in the second half?
"Because that was my decision."
3) Coach, what do you generally think went wrong?
"What do you mean?"

Then the rest of Hubert's remarks were about feeling bad for Seth and Henri, the seniors, and Elijah. Giving VCU credit, blah blah blah.

It's possible to discuss the game and the season without every third post being "CHD is terrible and doesn't know how to do anything and he's stupid and inept."

It's possible to say, the team lost its composure. Saying THAT's HD's fault is doubtful and not useful in the end. It's possible to say that the shooting wasn't good enough all season, or that the defense looked disorganized, without just reiterating over and over again insults to our head coach. It's possible to discuss basketball without being dicks to everyone.

So Hubert couldn't get his guys to focus and stop taking bad 3s and couldn't make adjustments on defense to stop Hill for VCU.

I mean - this is is an internet message board after a painful and embarrassing loss. A "pile-on" is exactly what to expect. Just let people blow off some steam.

A team losing its composure is reflective of that team’s coaching. The shooting wasn’t good because players were taking bad shots because the offense was not generating enough movement to get better looks. Those are all coaching issues.

I’d give him a pass for the game today. Every year there are 1 or 2 elite teams (3 seed or better) who get worked for 30 minutes by a team that is 6 inches shorter across the board but are cat quick, handle well, pass well, shoot well. Those teams rarely pull out the big win but they make it interesting for a bit.

Well, I find it especially dispiriting and I do not think I'm the only one. I think a lot of people get tired of maximum negativity all the time.

Losing to double digit seeds is dispiriting. Being a double digit seed is dispiriting. Missing the tournament is dispiriting. Outside of five or six weeks in 2022, Hubert Davis’ entire tenure has been dispiriting.

I understand that perspective, but of all the times to complain about "maximum negativity," surely you can understand that this is not the best choice. It's hard to fault people for "maximum negativity" after what we just watched. It's a fairly justifiable reaction.

But that's generally not true. Caleb Love did not start shooting better at U of A than he did here. He was basically the same player. Elliot Cadeau had a slightly higher 3 point % this year than last but not significantly and he was basically the same guy. The problem wasn't the offense. It's the guys can't shoot very well.

Jarin is a poor shooter. Dexter Strickland was a poor shooter. In neither case was it the offense's fault. They just aren't good. It's actually an entirely fair criticism to say that inattention to shooting ability has been a major roster-building failure. I don't think that was entirely it (we did try to get good shooters, and both Evans and Luka were good shooters last year), but it's been an issue.
