That win over Duke was a great win and a real high, but we looked overmatched for much of that game until our late game run. I think it’s questionable that it was a turning point or the beginning of a great late season run had everyone remained healthy. But we’ll never know one way or the other.

Yes, there was the inconsistency but I think the point was that if Caleb had stayed healthy then it is unlikely that we would be letting Hubert go this season. Hell, if we had won that VCU game - even after blowing the lead - we would very probably be keeping him for another season. I'm not saying that we should keep him (at this point I agree that he's done here), only that the reality is that even most of Hubert's critics had conceded that he would be back for another season until the VCU disaster. That epic, historic meltdown is what finally led a critical mass of UNC boosters, alums, and the powers-that-be to decide that he had to go. Without that loss it's highly unlikely that we'd be talking about him actually being let go, but instead we'd be having the usual arguments here about whether he should be let go and if he would do any better next season (the general consensus seemed to be that he would not). If you watch Hubert's postgame press conference you can tell that even he was stunned by the VCU collapse and had no real answers for what happened, and that led even many of his supporters (like me) to say "that's it, he's done."

Please inform me because I keep hearing a theme of inconsistency . What does that mean as it pertains to CHD's 5 years ?

Duke Game is at least more competitive. A run in the ACC tournament AND having Wilson all year likely boosts metrics as well.

I’m not arguing that he deserves another year, just that this season was def sunk due to horrible injury luck. Other than the west coast swing shit was pretty damn good.

It’s possible those things would have happened, but not particularly likely imo.

I think they should look at Holberg at Nebraska, too. I think May at Michigan and Lloyd at Arizona would be harder to get to leave. Otzelberger, Byington and Holberg are probably the best choices to actually be able to get.

If it didn’t work out it was always going to be a sad moment, but I agree. Has to be extra painful for Hubert that an injury like that was ultimately the final nail in the coffin.

I think I feel even worse for Wilson. Can’t imagine what he’s going through right now.

Wilson looked more bummed than anybody when the camera showed him at the end of that VCU game. That dude bless Carolina blue. Incredible Tar Heel.

Meaning that the team doesn’t play up to its potential on a consistent basis. We’ll beat duke one game, but then have disastrous games against Cal, Stanford, and SMU. Even within games itself, how many times have we built a large lead and then lost it? How many times have we dug ourselves a hole and then had to try to come back? Too much inconsistency. Another example was the Syracuse game this year. We’re up almost 30 and then barely hang on.

Then there’s inconsistency with recruiting. We’ll have good guards one year and a bad frontcourt, and then the next year it flips. We had arguably one of our best ever frontcourt duos this year, and we were headed to a 4/5 seed with our healthy roster.

Again, I’m a huge fan of Huber as a person and was pulling hard that he’d turn things around, even up to the VCU game. But when you look at the body of work the last 5 years, the only way to describe Hubert’s program identity is consistently inconsistent lol.

It means that our teams were inconsistent under HD and it was an (I'd say, the) issue that never got addressed. It showed up in the following ways...

- Huge swings in how the team played during individual games...starting exceptionally flat and only getting going after we'd get down a significant amount or playing well and being in the game (or even leading) and then have a 5+ minute section where we'd look like we had no real game plan and we'd give up a significant run or blowing significant leads near the end of games and either losing or pulling out narrow wins.

- Significant game to game inconsistency and never really knowing how the team would show up. The team would play really well one game and then look significantly worse the next and then like a much better team in the next game. Or we'd play really well over a 3-5 game stretch and then suddenly play really poorly over a 3-5 game stretch.

- Significant season to season inconsistency. One year we have a guard heavy roster and the next we have great bigs and not-so=great guards. There has been little continuity from year-to-year and, when there has been, it hasn't borne fruit on the court. And, of course, the biggest example here returning most of the starting lineup from a team who played in the NC game and then missing the NCAA tournament.

A lot has been said that the issue with HD is simply wins and losses and, at the heart of the matter, that is true. But a significant related issue has been that under HD, Carolina has failed to meet the standard of "Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Together". Far too often, the team has not done those 3 basic things that lead to success and the result has been, in addition to too many losses, a team often displays wild swings in performance between portions of games, games, and seasons.
