I wandered into that office for no reason many times just to be in the presence of Coach Smith. At the end, it was all four of Coach Smith, Coach Gut, Linda Woods, and Kay Thomas. Those folks are UNC royalty and that office wasn't fit for a volunteer assistant coach. What Doherty did was unforgivable and any UNC basketball alumni who encounters him to this day should punch him squarely in the face.

If it's true that Stevens turned down 7 yr, $70 million from Indiana, I have a hard time imagining we can beat that - or that Stevens would take less than that to coach us instead of Indiana, unless there's some big unknown reason why he's looking to leave the Celtics and/or get back into college coaching.

It was rumored that he was interested in the position after Roy retired, but the timing was off because of his kids being in school. But now his son plays for Notre Dame and his daughter is about to go to college. Still seems like a long shot because the Celtics will also want to fight to keep him. At least it's greater than a 0% chance lol

It was an insider on the football boards that first brought up Belichick. He thought it was a joke when he heard it, but turned out to be true lol
 
I would argue with even saying we don't have top 5 current relevance. We don't have top 5 current results, but there's a reason why this job search is top of all the basketball pundits conversation lists. We still have a top 5 fanbase, top 5 brand, top 5 ability and willingness to spend money on basketball, and as already mentioned top 5 historical results. Those haven't gone away because we paired them with a top 30 coach. I mean nobody is talking about who is going to be the next coach at Georgia Tech or Kansas State or Cincinnati, but let the UK job come open and that will be a major topic of conversation even though they haven't been that great lately either. That's because they still have top 5 current relevance in spite of recent results.

Look how often we are discussed on Field of 68 podcast during the season.

Look at our TV ratings for the year.

Look at our attendance numbers for the year.

Even on a current basis, we are one of the top 5 most relevant programs in basketball -- and that is after two Round of 64 exits in a row.
