I think it was always going to be a "family" hire. I don't think they were serious about other candidates and settled for Doherty pretty quickly. I think this time will truly be the one where they aren't considering family coaches.
Right. But it was still an open search. There was just affirmative action for UNC grads. It did take a while before we settled on Matt. A lot of people were concerned about his inexperience.

You can't call it an "open search" if everyone seriously considered had direct UNC ties and those ties were essential for being considered.

Dean advocated for Rick Majerus so it wasn’t exclusively family.

Moreover, the family at that time was quite large and successful - not like today. So there were plenty of quality UNC coaches to pursue.

I mean even today there is affirmative action for UNC grads. It’s just that there are not any realistic options. It was different in 2000.

They should have been more concerned about him being a complete asshole that no one liked.
Did everyone know that no one liked him or did that only become known once he was back in CH?

It seems that having spent 7 years as an assistant under Roy at KU folks would have been aware of this personality, but maybe it changed once he got the big seat at Carolina?

It would be very interesting to get the inside scoop on what Roy told Dean before Matt was hired. There had to be a reason Dean was not 100% behind Matt’s hiring and was suggesting other names.

I've heard that was more in a "if we have to go outside the family" way and not in a "Majerus was ever seriously considered" way.
Yes. That is what I heard too. But we were definitely getting to that point as the search dragged on. Also, as I posted above, Dean supposedly had some significant reservations about hiring Matt.

Make no mistake...Doherty can coach. He is also the most abrasive asshole I have ever had the displeasure of knowing personally. Id rather have dinner with Donald Trump than spend 5 minutes with Matt.
I worked with someone whose mother worked in the basketball administration. I remember approaching her early in the 1st season when Doh was having success, and I gave her a high 5 saying this is great. She shook her head and said Doh had alienated the entire administration staff. I ask her what she meant and she told me this story.

Just after Doh was hired and settling in, Phil Ford came by Doh's office to congratulate him and told him if there was anything he could do to help Doh just let him know.

Doh 's response to Ford was, "What you can do for me is to stay the fuck out of my way"

Carolina family, am I right?

Who would have ever guessed that he would turn into a raving MAGA lunatic on X a few years later?

If Carolina is to run a real search, it will never stay quiet. So if you don't announce HD's departure, once the rumors of us looking around start flying, it looks like we're working to replace him behind his back before we've discussed the situation with him.

Hell, the PTB can't even have a "private" discussion with the big money donors about HD's future without it becoming public and discussed.

College ADs have so many stakeholders involved in these decisions they inevitably leak like sieve. There's no way to do hardly any, much less all, of a coach replacement process in secret unless you cut out 98% of the typical stakeholders, which we can't do here. It's just not a feasible way to run things in our media-saturated time.
Never thought about this much
Makes sense
Thanks

I can understand Doh's sentiment. Maybe Doh is like Homer, sometimes forgetting whether he's talking or thinking.

I remember that it came out that his Notre Dame players disliked him and were warning UNC guys about him.

He was so damn petty . I had a work mate that worked , volunteered actually I guess, as an usher with her husband.
They had the seats behind the team-top of the line job for Ushers
He moved them -I guess because the families, recruiter connections were friendly with them...............

At the time, we were years away from MAGA, so no one.

But, with the gift of hindsight, we know the failed white guy to bitter MAGA lunatic path is pretty well-trod, so it shouldn't be surprising.

I knew a guy who played at Davidson when Doh was an assistant coach there, and didn’t really did not like him.

I also went to Davidson basketball camp when he was an assistant coach there and involved in the camp, and the campers didn’t really like him. Funny enough, during that summer, which was 1990, Hubert Davis came to talk to the campers.

I had thought that Karl had an out in his contract that would let him leave for UNC, but the PTB just weren't sold on the NBA->College transition.
Nope.

“…
Karl spent a long weekend attempting to convince the Bucks' owner, Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., to let him speak to the school beyond an informal chat with former coach Dean Smith, Karl's mentor. Kohl, who signed Karl to a four-year, $20 million deal in 1998, denied permission, Karl said.

"I'm not going to sit here and deny that I wish I had more freedom," Karl said. "Analyzing it, I probably would have done the same thing the Senator did, but that doesn't mean I'm happy with the decision."…

"I'm sure he's not totally happy with me," Karl said. "I'm not sure he understands the lure that place has for (alumni)."…”

That coaching search was one time I had some genuine inside info on anything of the sort and weirdly had two distinct lines of sight into the proceedings.
