And the past still doesn't predict the future. It wouldn't if the game had stayed the same and it sure won't stop changing for a while.

If Davis couldn't put together consistent performances with a generational talent, I don't know why anyone would expect him to be able to do so when actively compensating for the absence of a generational talent.
It's tough to lose your best player under any circumstances for any coach.

No one should expect the Heels to be better now or even as good.

My expectations for the season have dropped significantly.

UNC has proven its ability to be at the top of basketball for a longer period and through more coaches than any other program - with Kentucky and Kansas close behind (benefitted greatly by much easier conferences historically)

In addition, we are soon joining an elite P2 conference and building a state of the art arena. We are likely willing to pay top dollar to bring the basketball program back to the top.

It is an extremely attractive job. Obviously, some people will turn it down for personal reasons but we will have our pick of 99.99% of all available candidates. It is up to Newkirk and Roy and Roberts to find that next great coach (if a change needs to be made, which is not a sure thing yet).
I don't 99.9% is accurate particularly for the level of coach UNC would want.

Without CWilson, this team still has top-25 talent. It's not too much to ask, too high of standards, to expect them to perform at that level. The thing is, with CWilson, the best freshman we've had in a very long time, the team was performing at that level.

It does not. It has a good offensive center in Veesaar who cannot bang underneath and rebounds poorly. Jarin Stevenson is a glue guy, and not even that good a glue guy at that. Not so many Top 25 teams are led by freshmen 4 star point guards. Our shooting guard can't really shoot, though he can get into the paint. The wild card is Bogo. If he can shoot like we think he can, he could be a top 25 type starter but as it is, not so much.

One of the worst features of the coach-haters is their willingness to exaggerate the teams' talent in order to make the coach look particularly bad.

Super, I strongly disagree with you. This team, without CWilson, still has top-25 team. Also, must you continue with this "coach-hater" bullshit? There is a massive difference from being critical of HD/staff when warranted and hating on them. I don't think anyone here simply hates on them.

You can't tell it by the constantly shifting standards floating around counting the days until he's gone.

I guess I have more faith in Dixon running point. Young was starting for a reason, which was not because he's more talented. You don't think this team has top-25 talent?

No. Evans, Boga, Young, High aren't good

Stevenson and Powell are role players

Dixon is a year away at least

Poor Veesaar and Trimble

I don’t believe it’s top 25 talent without Caleb. After Henri and Seth what is there?

I guess I disagree. There's no way this team, without CWilson, is not as talented and/or put together significantly worse than:

BYU, St. John’s, Iowa, Saint Louis, Utah State, State, UK, Nova, Auburn, Indiana, Arkansas, TAMU

(I pulled these from Torvik and KenPom)

Multiple sources have confirmed to Inside Carolina that Wilson is indeed expected to return to the court this season. The injury will not require surgery, according to two sources. That determination has led to an expected timeframe of 3-4 weeks for Wilson’s return, according to sources.

I guess I implied, though I did not mean to, that you were a coach-hater. That was a more general observation grafted on in a way that seemed to apply to you. That confusion is on me.

But I don't see much agreement with the "without Caleb we are top 25 material." I just don't see what you see. It's not HD that makes Jared Stevenson mostly glide around the court -- he did that at Bama too. It's not HD making Powell into a specialist -- that's what he has always been. Veesaar, ironically, is showing a lot more than he did at Zona. If Evans could shoot like he did last year, maybe you'd have a point. Unfrotunately it looks like last year was his outlier.

No worries.

From a simplistic pov, if you take the potential of this team (which we saw against UVA 2nd half, Duke 2nd half, Cuse first 30 min, KU 2nd half) and take away CWilson, that team can compete with the others who're sitting around 25th. It's just a matter of getting them to reach their potential.
