And?

UNC is not ordained to be a top 5 program over every 5 year period.

They could be over the next 5 if they spend the $.
Do you think next season looks better than this one? And it doesn't have to be a top 5 team every year, but there are other programs that have been consistently in the top 10 the last 5 seasons.

Duke Arizona Purdue and Houston have zero natties in that time. Houston threw one away last year. Lost at home Saturday as 7 point fav and lost last night to a team we beat. Point is everyone has warts.
UNC started as #1 and miss the entire tournament!

Last year we were gifted a play game!

He's been up and down... and this is the , $1m up year! (I hope 13 million of that was spent on Caleb and Big V)

I am perfectly familiar with Dean's first five years. I find them completely irrelevant to this conversation. That was 65 years ago in what might as well have been a completely different sport.
I posted that only because you suggested the analogy. I agree that things today are hardly like they were 65 years ago, 35, or even 5.

Who knows? It's the portal era.
We'll see. Maybe it will get better. But based on things so far there really isn't any evidence yet that Carolina will be one of those consistent top 10 programs with Hubert. I just don't know how long you give him to get there and how many "good" seasons are enough to keep him to see if it gets more consistent.

you've seen that there are teams that have found some consistency in the portal era... perhaps this team needs someone who understands the portal era better.

This doesn't mean that Hubert sucks as a human... he's clearly a great human and a Basketball servant. However he's not been able to put a consistent team out there or show organizational improvement.

We can say that we have different standards... but you don't spend top 5 money on a top five brand to be happy with top 30 results.

You're on record that you want him fired.

I'm just using efficiency metrics because they are not, like wins and losses, subject to the wildly varying strength of schedule that college bball teams play. Focusing only on total wins and losses without any other context (like looking at who we played, or how utterly embarrassing the losses were) is a great way to get an extremely misleading picture. You are giving credit for stacking meaningless wins against terrible teams in a historically bad ACC, which is a pointless exercise when judging performance at a school like UNC.

Also, note that I very clearly didn't call it a "bad season." I said it was a really bad 2/3 of a season, followed by a brilliant final third. It is, as I noted, very reminiscent of NC State's 2024 season where they were bad most of the season then had a transcendent postseason that surely made the season very memorable for their fans. And also somewhat reminiscent of the last time an 8-sed UNC went to the FF in 2000. I don't want you or anyone else to give up the special memories from late February/March of that season. I'm not giving mine up. But if we have to rely on seasons where we get an 8 seed and make a miracle tournament run as the "good" seasons for our program, that isn't a very sustainable model. (Note that the 2000 UNC season and 2024 NC State season were not indicative of programs in good shape.) The best sign of an elite program is that they are consistently playing well enough in the regular season to earn high NCAAT seeds. Focusing too heavily on tournament results is fool's gold.
Efficiency metrics currently rate Louisville 13 spots ahead of us because they beat the shit out of deadbeat opponents. We have clearly better wins and beat them yesterday without our best player. So wins versus bad teams factor into metric ratings too.

And give me a break comparing the ncst run to our season. That ncst team finished 10th in the ACC, we finished 2nd. They went 4-10 their last 14 games, including losing their last 4 straight. They were nowhere near the bubble before the run in the ACC tournament. Our regular season was miles better than theirs.

There are a few teams, yes. Some figured it out first, some hit the talent target, some spent more. It's not like there's a definitive formula.

I feel like UNC is getting close.

I already edited and clarified I think. He seems blissfully ignorant of probabilities and when I pointed it out, doubled up on it. Frankly, I overreacted and should have just let it go or at least approached it differently.
I’m curious what probabilities you would assign to those teams listed?

It's well established.
I just don't see Carolina getting to being a consistent top 10 program with Hubert. Maybe things will be better and it will happen, and I will gladly eat crow. I just don't know how long they go with the up and down seasons before making a change. There's also been inconsistencies within the seasons. We'll see. I just don't want them to get into a never ending loop of a bad season followed by a good one and being okay with that now.

We know your position.
