ChatGPT is an amazing tool if used correctly. I don't understand the hate. And no, usage does not drop off 85% from May to June.

AI is a ridiculously powerful tool... almost beyond belief. But it's still a tool. It has its strengths and weaknesses... and sometimes it's the right tool for the job... and sometimes not. Hating it is pointless. It's no different than hating computers or the internet.

I can certainly see why teachers would be predisposed to dislike it, as they have been on the front line of dealing with kids misusing it to avoid learning. I have fears about whether it will be a net positive to society in the long run... but we've been asking that question about the latest tech for a long time.

okay, 55%.
That's a small subset of users, and it likely does not include the paying users. I doubt very much there is all that much effect on the overall use, though it is undeniable that it is used by students extensively.

It's an incredible teaching tool if used properly. My son uses it to supplement the lectures in his engineering classes because the lectures are bad and he understands from Chat GPT much better.

No they weren't more talented. But as I said, the problem with 8-20 was the distribution of talent. I think no PG in the history of Carolina basketball spent more time dribbling laterally than Adam Boone. That is, when he wasn't dribbling with his back to the basket at half court. And Morrison just couldn't play in control. He was an ADHD player -- no attentiveness on defense, no patience on offense, just a guy who chased the highlight play every single time.

You can't run offense if you can't get the ball past the hashmarks or if you turn it over every third time you do.
That post gave me PTSD

Anyway, back to Coach HD
I just off the phone with my guy with (supposedly) the inside scoop and it’s not got anything to do with HD as a coach, wins and losses, making the tournament, recruiting, etc.

Nothing at all to do with the game itself really.

It’s all about the money (and it’s got nothing to do with a Hubert contract buyout) and the DEI aspects and the total dismantling of not only the basketball team but the liberal arts college/university altogether.

The powers that be who hold sway, the 24 Board of Governors (and according to my guy there are 4 specific ones) who want to:

A. Build the new arena because one or more of them will get the building contracts or the kick backs from the money spent. (They may not get as much - if any - to reno DES.) And they don’t give a rats ass about whether or not the new arena will be beneficial or a detriment to the basketball program.

B. Fire HD because they say he was a DEI hire - and they don’t give a rats ass if anybody cares that a Black coach gets canned… or what any talking head on ESPN says or thinks about it.

C. Hire a Maga coach, or some other coach who may or may not be good for the basketball program.
(See Bill Bellycheck hiring). Those of us who are afraid of losing HD because of who the BOG will hire to replace him, are well founded in those fears.

D. This is the tip of the iceberg because the PTB/BOG arseholes won’t stop at the athletic programs. It’s all about hiring Maga and taking down the libruls en masse at All 17 UNC member institutions.

So we can all quibble about HD and his W’s and L’s; his quad 1 wins; his “bubble” teams; his recruiting; etc…. Or who his possible replacement may be whom we think may come in like a knight in shining armor and restore the once great bball program El Deano masterminded…. But it don’t mean squat.

No, it’s all about the Maga and owning the libs.

That and the money to be made by only a certain few.

Instead of arguing about who should replace Hubert, we should be arguing over who those 24 BOG arseholes are and how to get rid of them.

Basically this thread should be reclassified from UNC Sports and moved over to the politics threads because ultimately, that’s where it belongs.

That's kind of tough to answer. If I think back to Carolina's history since Dean Smith was hired, not looking anything up, in the next 10 years, I would hope for 12 wins over dook, be in the conversation for the national championship most years, 2 final fours, one championship game, average finish 25-30 wins and average sweet 16.

ETA i'm not sure that's realistic in the era of nil and free agency.
You say that's what you'd hope for...do you think HD is capable of delivering?

Absolutely !

Win 30 games/year for the next 8 years
at least make the sweet 16 every year
2 Final Fours
play in a national championship game

but if he can't win at least one national championship in the next 8 years, then he should be fired !
That would certainly be a worthy set of outcomes for a Carolina Basketball HC.

I'd even be willing to have some leeway on not winning the NC in that time. 🤣

The announcement tomorrow will be indicative. If recruiting is holding up and we establish some four year players like Denis ,maybe Dixon and such to establish some stability and nothing gets a lot screwier with NIL , I think he could. He's getting better as a coach, imo, and ,as you insist , the school sells itself. If the general manager lives up to his part, then I think he could do that.

If any of this true Hubert Davis is the least of UNC's problems and the program is on the verge of disaster.

OK, but say we were #50. There's still a reasonable likelihood of losing at least one of four games against a 72 and three 110s. And I think #50 was above the ceiling for that group. But again, I don't remember very well after all these years and if it's OK, would rather not start digging up those memories.
We can let the discussion go, as it's not terribly important now, as you state.

I think the thing about it being a talent vs. coaching issue is most interesting in the hypothetical of how Roy might have done in the 2001-2002 season had he returned in 2000. Of course, Roy might have done a bit better in recruiting the 2001 class, but those would likely have still been freshmen guards trying to carry the load in the backcourt rather than the sophs from the 2000 class.

Yeah, I'm not really ignoring the post, but I don't see much use in getting into discussing it because, if it's accurate, nothing we say on here will make a hill of beans difference anyway.

The country and democracy as we know it in this country is on the verge of disaster.
If anybody thinks Project 2025 doesn’t have “bring those liberal colleges and universities to their knees” as part of the agenda is not being honest with themselves.

Think about it. If Roy gosh darn Williams advocates for keeping the Dean Dome and verbalizes what DES himself said on his deathbed about keeping the hoops on campus, and yet we still have talks going on behind the scenes to ignore Roy, AND Dean… and the possibility of getting shed of the Smith Center is a viable reality… then it’s quite obvious there are some seriously evil and vile people behind it all.

How many of those 24 on the BOG are Republicans? How many are Maga? How many attended NCState? How many stand to get money from the construction of a new arena? How many are racist m-fers who would love the opportunity to axe Hubert without any care at all about his win/loss record?

Who can stop them?

It will absolutely destroy us as a species. Thats my take. Every use of generative AI is one further nail in that eventual coffin.

There was an article tha was red flag number 218 about Roberts that came out in the fall (i think the week we played at Cal) where he was all in on AI

Knowing how people are and how the majority of the rich are, do we really think AI is going to be used to make most people's lives better, or most people's lives worse at the betterment of the super wealthy?
