Some loose thoughts after catching up on the last few pages:
-Felton had a pretty long NBA career (10+ years), averaging 11.3 ppg over that career. Made tons of money and played a long time . Hardly a bust.
-I'm real happy that Caleb Love is doing well in Portland. I always thought his greatest weakness emanated from his strength, making tough shots. I don't think I've ever seen such terrible shot selection from such a talented player. HD was never able to reign it in (I still shudder at the amount of contested midrange jumpers early in the shot clock that Caleb would fire up), though if we're being honest Roy didn't do a good job of nipping that in the bud. I hope he makes it in the league. He's really talented (not on the Felton level though).
-Capel and Lang were good starter level players so shit sandwich may be some hyperbole. The backcourt, OTOH, was terrible and that goes back squarely to Guthridge's recruiting misses.
-Doherty left a lot of talent in the cupboard for Roy. They would have not stayed had he remained.
-Mark Pope runs some really neat stuff on offense; think he has great strategic basketball knowledge. I don't know how good he is at the other functions needed from a HC at a blue blood, and that could certainly be a drag on performance. Not sure he's a great recruiter, but that can be solved through staff.
-Nate Oats is a dick. His basketball philosophy, however, fits in well with where the modern game has gone. But he lacks class and grace, and I wouldn't want him at Carolina.
-Feels like we're in whack a mole in recruiting. All looks good to get Mingo...great, we're going to have a good PG. But with Wilson leaving and maybe Vasaar, and not much behind them, we will have gaping holes in the front court which need to be addressed in the portal (which has been hit or miss for us).

Haven't done the exhaustive search tbh. Would probably focus on the bule bloods and quasi blue bloods.
UCLA is an interesting case.
Don't know if Ben Howland averaged 25 wins. He had success early on (3 straight FFs), then had some rough years missing the tourney 2 of 4 years. Was fired after going 25-10.
Alford probably averaged just under 25 wins. He got fired during the season, after making the FF the previous year.
Perusing quickly the track record with the blue bloods is that most will wait for that sub 20 win season to swing the axe.

HD/staff have an opportunity tonight to shut up us "anti-Hubert," "Hubert haters," .... et cetera. Going into Raleigh and coming out with W would go towards showing a little bit of consistency with good play.

Tom Crean had a slow start at Indiana, but was given lots of leeway due to the penalties Indiana was dealing with from the Kelvin Sampson era. But in his last 6 seasons there, he averaged 23 wins per season. He got fired after going 18-16.
Bruce Weber averaged over 23 wins per season at Illinois and was pushed out after going 17-15.
Mark Turgeon got fired in the middle of 11th season at Maryland, but averaged over 22 wins per season during his first 10 (he went 17-14 in his last full season, the covid year).
Mike Woodson was just pushed out at Indiana after just 4 seasons in which he averaged over 20 wins per season.
Michael White got pushed out at Florida after averaging over 20 wins per season over 7 years
Denny Crum was quietly pushed out of Louisville after 4 sun-20 win seasons, with the last being 12-19, but he averaged nearly 23 wins per season for his entire career at Louisville (and 20 wins was a much bigger deal during his time).

Of the four primary players that won that natty for us - Felton, May, McCants, and Williams - Felton and McCants had basically been UNC commits since they could walk (Doherty did not fuck that up until after they actually got here), May was landed by Phil Ford because of his relationship with Scott May, and Roy landed Marvin. So I really don't think Doherty left one damn thing in the cupboard for Roy, but the tradition of this school did.

We've botched enough of those lifetime Heel fan/recruits to know better that these are sure things. Jawad, Jackie and even ol Melvin Scott (in our UNC chat, one of our guys totally hates one guy per year...and at that time his guy was Melvin Scott) were squarely Doh recruits.
There's plenty of other things were Doherty was an abject disaster, but I will give him credit for recruiting those two classes under his watch. And yes, he totally missed on the 03 class missing on all his big men targets (Padgett, Butch, Kleiza, Watkins, and Taft IIRC).

Said it on a thread earlier today but this was the type of demoralizing blowout loss I was hoping we could avoid tonight because of what it might mean for the rest of the season. Just hope the team doesn’t completely roll over in the closing stretch. Moribund Syracuse as the next opponent is a good scheduling break to get some momentum back.
