The conference thing is an interesting angle because the BIG is most definitely a good place to be in one of the 2 major sports.
I think the conference thing is huge. Despite their status among the bluest of blue bloods, both UNC and Kansas will be at a disadvantage trying to lure coaches from $EC or Big Ten schools because their conferences just can’t compete financially.

i "think" we have plenty of Basketball money

I also don't think anyone believes that Carolina will be anywhere other than the SEC or BIG within the next 5 years. I am also not saying we are or should be looking for a head basketball coach. Ive said before that debate cant be civilly had here and I mean to stick to it. I was just taking exception to the idea that Dusty May would not leave Michigan.

Short answer: yes—but with real caveats. Hubert Davis is a good coach, just not universally viewed as elite (yet), especially by UNC standards.

Here’s the honest breakdown:

🟢 Why Hubert Davis is a good coach

1. Strong overall record
  • Career record around 120–50 (.700 win%)
  • That’s objectively very good, especially early in a career.
2. Historic early success
  • Took UNC to the 2022 national title game in his first season
  • One of the best first-year coaching runs in college basketball history
3. Proven ability to win big games
  • Beat Duke Blue Devils at Cameron in Coach K’s final home game
  • Beat Duke again in the Final Four (huge legacy moment)
4. ACC success
  • Won ACC regular season title (2024) and Coach of the Year
🔴 Why people question him

1. Inconsistency year-to-year
  • Seasons like: 29–10 → 20–13 → 29–8 → 23–14
  • That’s good… but uneven for a blue-blood program.
2. No national title (yet)
  • At UNC, the bar is Dean Smith / Roy Williams level
  • Getting close isn’t enough long-term.
3. Underperformance stretches
  • Some teams have:
    • Barely made the tournament
    • Been on the bubble
    • Looked disorganized at times (criticized in recent games)
4. Rivalry record scrutiny
  • Around .400 vs Duke as head coach
  • That matters a lot at UNC.
🧠 The real verdict
  • Floor: Clearly a good coach
  • Ceiling: Still trying to prove he’s elite
Think of him like this:
He’s shown flashes of being a great coach, but hasn’t sustained it long enough yet.

🏁 Bottom line
  • If you’re judging him like a normal program → definitely good
  • If you’re judging him by UNC standards → good, but still under pressure

Still a lot of history in front of both coaches, but numbers wise so far HD has won 70.3% of his game and 8 NCAA Tournament games in 4 years. The face has won 82.6% of his games and also won 8 NCAA Tournament games in a season less (3) than HD. The numbers favor JS.

JS has had far superior talent and a far more committed NIL machine behind him.

At the end of the day, go to hell dook.

Fan opinion on Hubert Davis is very split right now—and honestly, it swings week-to-week depending on results.

Here’s the real pulse of the fanbase 👇

🔵 1. The “Supporters” (still a big chunk)
These fans like him and want him to succeed.

What they say:
  • He represents Carolina the right way
  • He’s a “Tar Heel guy” (played for Dean Smith, coached under Roy)
  • He’s already proven he can win big games
👉 One fan perspective:

“Hubert Davis is a good coach… undeniable moments of greatness”

👉 Emotional loyalty is huge:
  • Some fans separate him as a person vs results
  • He’s viewed as humble, classy, and authentic
Vibe:
  • “Stick with him”
  • “He’s still growing”
  • “Don’t become impatient like other programs”
🟡 2. The “Middle Ground” (probably the largest group)
This is where most UNC fans live.

What they think:
  • He’s good… but not great
  • Still unproven long-term
  • Needs to show consistency
👉 A very common take:
“Hubert is good. He’s not great… that may not meet UNC standards.”
Their concerns:
  • Inconsistent seasons
  • Strange losses / lack of preparation
  • Portal/NIL roster building early struggles
Vibe:
  • “We’re watching closely”
  • “Next 1–2 years are huge”
🔴 3. The “Frustrated / Anti-Hubert” group (growing recently)
This group has gotten louder—especially during rough stretches.

What they say:
  • Team is underachieving relative to talent
  • Defensive effort / discipline issues
  • Too many “mid” seasons for UNC standards
👉 Real fan reactions:
“The Hubert Davis era has to be coming to an end soon”
“UNC is settling… being mid is becoming the norm”

What triggers them:
  • Blowout losses
  • Bad defense
  • Road struggles
Recent criticism has even popped up in media after bad losses and inconsistency
Vibe:
  • “He’s not the guy”
  • “Time to move on if no deep run soon”
⚖️ The BIG picture (this is key)

UNC is not a normal job.
Fans are comparing him to:
  • Dean Smith
  • Roy Williams
So the standard isn’t:
“Is he good?”

It’s:
“Is he championship-level every year?”

🧠 The honest fan consensus
If you boiled it down:
  • ~25% → Strongly support him
  • ~50% → Cautious / wait-and-see
  • ~25% → Ready to move on (especially after bad losses)
🏁 Bottom line
Fan sentiment right now is:

“We like Hubert Davis… but we don’t fully trust him yet.”

And the biggest truth:
👉 One Final Four run = he’s safe and beloved again

👉 Another inconsistent/bubble year = seat gets very hot

One more group.

Dint like him because he is A-A. Some are blatant. Then there are the low ceiling and not up to the task comments. I mean the guy literally would have a natty if we were not crippled in second half against Kansas.
And one good overall season since a great run at the end of his first season. The problem has always been the inconsistentcy. Almost winning a championship isn't enough when you have more mediocre to bad seasons than good ones. I don't understand how people don't get that. Hopefully this season ends up being at least good overall, but it remains to be seen.

Where are these people that don't like Coach Davis because he is Black? Do you actually know such people? Thank goodness I do not.

You always sell that 21-22 team short. Yes they got off to a rough start but we've 17-4 over the last 2/3 of the season, went 15-5 in the ACC, and of course spoiled K's party.

They were more than just a good NCAAT run.

In total that had to count as a successful season overall, not just a run.

I agree with you there. Do you also agree that the following season was an unmitigated disaster that showed a coach not ready to deal with the hype and pressure of a highly ranked team with interesting personalities?

This is favorable. That winning % is not that good considering who we are.

No mention of #1 to missing tournament.

No mention of trending down.
