Given that Coach Gut was going to be inherently time-limited by age and Dean was (at the time) assured he had the next coach already lined after Gut, I think that was less "an irresponsible mistake" and more "a complicated situation" that was fairly believed would work out perfectly fine in the long run. Of course, Gut/Roy certainly made it interesting for a little while by not following the plan.
fair enough. my original "irresponsible mistake" wording was a bit harsh.

my overarching point is that dean made that big decision for the program and it went poorly, so i don't know why people are pretending like his opinion is infallible.

as @Calheel alluded to, if anything dean himself would probably recognize that he might not be the ideal person to make the best, most dispassionate decisions for the program.

I definitely think that Coach Smith would have counseled Coach Davis not to pack the schedule with so many tough games last season.

I believe the metrics take into account quality of opponent (at the time of the game). (Which is why they're a better judge of performance than the polls.)

The advanced metrics take into account quality of opponent at the time the model is run (meaning currently). That's why you'll see small changes to any particular team's rating even when they don't play.

I don't claim to have any idea of what Dean would feel about keeping Hubert. First this has been confirmed numerous times'

When Chancellor William Aycock hired Dean Smith as the head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina in 1961, he gave him the following primary conditions and instructions:
  • Run a Clean Program: Following a recruiting scandal and NCAA probation that led to Frank McGuire’s resignation, the primary mandate was to ensure the program operated with integrity.
  • Prioritize Ethics Over Wins: Aycock told the 30-year-old Smith that running a clean program that represented the university well was more important than the immediate wins and losses on the scoreboard.
  • Adhere to NCAA Rules: Smith was explicitly instructed to always play fair and operate within NCAA rules
What I've observed. Smith's pride in his graduation rates, the decorum he expected in dressing for travel to the games, on court and in the classroom and the things like thoughts of the day in practice and concerns for all his players for all his life makes me think he never forgot those conditions. Iow, that strongly suggests to me that the success in basketball was more the results of his goal than the goal itself.

My opinion is that this is an attitude that has been important to us and good to us. It's what has made our program a family for decades before there was a brotherhood. I believe that, in the long run there is a move toward establishing less transitory rosters, that tradition will be valuable again. Of course I can't know that. It is part of why I'm willing to give Hubert a little slack. It just seems like trying to retain those links are easier than later trying to restore them.

How many of y'all think that Roy Williams was as good of a coach as Dean Smith?
Coach wise-yea he was
Complete program building PR greatness No
But its Nit picking Both HOFers, Carolina true and Blue
My opinion :)

From reading all of these posts one thing seems clear - letting Hubert go at the end of this season would be a highly divisive move among the fanbase, and any new coach would have his work cut out in winning over a good chunk of the fanbase. And no, that's not necessarily a reason not to let him go at the end of the year, but I think that anyone who believes that fans will quickly rally around a new coach are fooling themselves, imo.

Keeping HD at the end of this season will also be divisive. That's pretty much what happens when you have a divided fanbase.

I agree, just pointing out that if he is let go any new coach is going to have his work cut out for him as there are going to be a lot of angry people. Maybe it's worth it, maybe not depending on how Hubert closes out this season.

Pretty good coaching job by Hubert since Caleb got hurt..anyone else agree,? Meanwhile wade has lost by 41 and 29 and lost 7 point lede in final minute at home to Miami and 9 points with 4 minutes today at Notre Dame.
Gotta love it.
